U.N. confirms Iran uranium enrichment claim

(AP)  VIENNA - Diplomats on Monday confirmed a report that Iran has begun uranium enrichment at an underground bunker and said the news is particularly worrying because the site is being used to make material that can be upgraded more quickly for use in a nuclear weapon than the nation's main enriched stockpile.

The diplomats said that centrifuges at the Fordo site near Iran's holy city of Qom are churning out uranium enriched to 20 percent. That level is higher than the 3.5 percent being made at Iran's main enrichment plant and can be turned into fissile warhead material faster and with less work.

Video: Iran says its enriching uranium at underground lab
Iran claims new uranium enrichment

The move was expected, with Tehran announcing months ago that it would use the Fordo facility for 20 percent production. Iran began to further enrich a small part of its uranium stockpile to nearly 20 percent as of February 2010 at a less-protected experimental site, saying it needs the higher grade material to produce fuel for a Tehran reactor that makes medical radioisotopes for cancer patients.

But with the time and effort reduced between making weapons-grade uranium from the 20-percent level, the start of the Fordo operation increases international fears that Iran is determined to move closer to the ability to make nuclear warheads — despite insistence by the Islamic Republic that it is enriching only to make reactor fuel. Its dismissal of findings by the International Atomic Energy Agency of secret experimental work on a nuclear weapons program also worries the international community.

Iran recently threatened to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, an important transit route for almost one-fifth of the oil traded globally. Tehran also has been angered by the West's efforts to sanction Iran over its nuclear program, including a possible ban on European imports of Iranian oil.

Fordo's location increases concerns.

The facility is a hardened tunnel and is protected by air defense missile batteries and the Revolutionary Guard. The site is located about 20 miles north of Qom, the religious nerve center of Iran's ruling system. The semiofficial Mehr news agency quoted Iran's nuclear chief, Fereidoun Abbasi, as saying Sunday that "the enemy doesn't have the ability to damage it."

Built next to a military complex, Fordo was long kept secret and was only acknowledged by Iran after it was identified by Western intelligence agencies in September 2009.

Two diplomats spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because their information was confidential and based on an inspection of Fordo last week by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

They said 348 machines were operating at Fordo in two cascades — the linked up configuration needed to enrich. Two other cascades were nearly assembled but not working, they said. The centrifuges appeared to be the standard old-generation machines in use at the main enrichment site at Natanz and not advanced, more efficient prototype versions.

About 8,000 centrifuges are operating at Natanz, where five years of enrichment have turned out enough material for several nuclear warheads.

The Fordo startup was first reported Sunday by the daily Kaynan, a hardline newspaper close to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final word on all important matters of state. Abbasi was more circumspect, saying Saturday that his country will "soon" begin enrichment at Fordo.

It was impossible to reconcile the two reports. But the diplomats speculated that they could be a further reflection of divisions within Iran's ruling circles about how upfront the nation should be with nuclear activities that are drawing increasingly severe international penalties beyond four sets of U.N. Security Council sanctions.

Iran — which claims it only seeks nuclear reactors for energy and research — has sharply increased its threats and military posturing against stronger pressures, including U.S. sanctions targeting Iran's Central Bank in attempts to complicate its ability to sell oil.

A senior commander of the Revolutionary Guard force was recently quoted as saying Tehran's leadership has decided to order the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic oil route, if the country's petroleum exports are blocked. Revolutionary Guard ground forces also staged war games in eastern Iran in an apparent display of resolve against U.S. forces just over the border in Afghanistan.

Iranian officials have issued similar threats, but this was the strongest statement yet by a top commander in the security establishment.

"The supreme authorities ... have insisted that if enemies block the export of our oil, we won't allow a drop of oil to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. This is the strategy of the Islamic Republic in countering such threats," Revolutionary Guard deputy commander Ali Ashraf Nouri was quoted as saying by another newspaper, the Khorasan daily.

Adding to Iran-U.S. tensions, Iran's state radio reported Monday that a Tehran court has convicted an American man of working for the CIA and sentenced him to death.

Iran charges that as a former U.S. Marine, Amir Mirzaei Hekmati received special training and served at U.S. military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan before heading to Iran for his alleged intelligence mission. The radio report did not say when the verdict was issued. Under Iranian law, Hekmati, a dual U.S.-Iranian national has 20 days to appeal. His father, a professor at a community college in Flint, Michigan, has said his son is not a CIA spy and was visiting his grandmothers in Iran when he was arrested.

In an interview broadcast Sunday, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Iran is laying the groundwork for making nuclear weapons someday, but is not yet building a bomb. Panetta reiterated U.S. concerns about a unilateral strike by Israel against Iran's nuclear facilities, saying the action could trigger Iranian retaliation against U.S. forces in the region.

"We have common cause here" with Israel, he said. "And the better approach is for us to work together."

Panetta's remarks on CBS' "Face the Nation" reflect the U.S. administration's long-held view that Iran is not yet committed to building a nuclear arsenal, only to create the industrial and scientific capacity to allow one if its leaders to decide to take that final step.

President Barack Obama approved new sanctions against Iran a week ago, targeting the central bank and its ability to sell petroleum abroad. The U.S. has delayed implementing the sanctions for at least six months, worried about sending the price of oil higher at a time when the global economy is struggling.

The U.S. and Israel have said that all options remain open, including military action, should Iran continue with its enrichment program.

Iran announced this months ago but several articles make it sound like they've been caught red handed.  it's kinda old news. UN is just confirming what Iran told them they were going to do.  This article has the right facts but I've seen some that made it look like an OMG we caught them.

Israel’s IDF Chief: We Are Ready to Strike Iran
Sunday, 22 Apr 2012
By Dave Eberhart

The Israeli Defense Forces [IDF] are prepared and ready to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, Chief of Staff Benny Gantz told the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper in an interview published Sunday.

“In principle, we are ready to act,” the army chief revealed just ahead of Israel’s upcoming Independence Day, reports Ynet.com.

This year, Israel’s Independence Day is celebrated on April 26. The Declaration of the Establishment of State of Israel was made on May 14, 1948, expressing the declaration to be “by virtue of our natural and historic right and on the strength of the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly.” The new state was quickly recognized by the Soviet Union and the United States, as well as other countries, but not by the surrounding Arab states, which quickly declared war.

In the special pre-holiday interview with Yedioth Ahronoth, Gantz emphasized that 2012 was going to be “a critical year” in the heated Israel-Iran crisis.

“The State of Israel believes that nuclear arms in Iran’s possession are a very bad thing, which the world should stop and Israel should stop. We are preparing our plan accordingly.”

The army chief also addressed the likelihood of a broader regional war breaking out in the near future: “Our intelligence assessment asserts that given the strategic reality and instability in the region, the chance of deteriorating to a war is higher than in the past. There are no indications of war, but the chances of the situation deteriorating into one are higher than in the past.”

During the interview with Yedioth Ahronoth, Gantz also revealed that IDF operations being carried out beyond Israel’s borders have been ramped up.

“I don’t think you will find a point in time where something isn’t happening somewhere in the world,” he said. “The level of risk has increased as well. This is not something invented by Benny Gantz. I’m not taking the credit here. I’m simply accelerating all those special operations.”

US deploys F-22s to base near Iran
By Justin Fishel
Published April 27, 2012
FoxNews.com

The U.S. military has deployed several F-22s, the nation's most advanced fighter jets, to an allied base less than 200 miles from Iran.

The Air Force strongly denies this deployment is meant as a show of force against Iran or that it is in some way related to a potential strike on Iran's nuclear facilities. Rather, it says this is all part of a routine deployment and "security cooperation with regional partners."

The Air Force won't say how many jets were sent or exactly where they are stationed, but privately, U.S. officials have told Fox News the jets are in hangars at the United Arab Emirates' Al Dafra Air Base, a fact first reported by Aviation Week.

The F-22 has not yet seen combat. The jets were not used in Iraq, Afghanistan or Libya. They are stealth, and they specialize in air-to-air combat, but can also strike air-to-ground if needed. As one Air Force official put it, "this is America's premier fighter jet. It has no rival."

The next round for Iran nuclear negotiations, which many consider to be the country's last diplomatic opportunity, takes place on May 23 in Baghdad.

"The United States Air Force has deployed F-22s to Southwest Asia. Such deployments strengthen military-to-military relationships, promote sovereign and regional security, improve combined tactical air operations, and enhance interoperability of forces, equipment and procedures," Lt.Col. John Dorrian, Air Force public affairs, said in a written statement.

US envoy to Israel: Plans in place to attack Iran if necessary
Published May 18, 2012
Associated Press

JERUSALEM –  The U.S. has plans in place to attack Iran if necessary to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons, Washington's envoy to Israel said, days ahead of a crucial round of nuclear talks with Tehran.

Dan Shapiro's message resonated Thursday far beyond the closed forum in which it was made: Iran should not test Washington's resolve to act on its promise to strike if diplomacy and sanctions fail to pressure Tehran to abandon its disputed nuclear program.

Shapiro told the Israel Bar Association the U.S. hopes it will not have to resort to military force.

"But that doesn't mean that option is not fully available. Not just available, but it's ready," he said. "The necessary planning has been done to ensure that it's ready."

Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, like energy production. The U.S. and Israel suspect Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons, but differences have emerged in how to persuade Tehran to curb its program.

Washington says diplomacy and economic sanctions must be given a chance to run its course, and is taking the lead in the ongoing talks between six global powers and Iran.

Israel, while saying it would prefer a diplomatic solution, has expressed skepticism about these talks and says time is running out for military action to be effective.

President Barack Obama has assured Israel that the U.S. is prepared to take military action if necessary, and it is standard procedure for armies to draw up plans for a broad range of possible scenarios. But Shapiro's comments were the most explicit sign yet that preparations have been stepped up.

In his speech, Shapiro acknowledged the clock is ticking.

"We do believe there is time. Some time, not an unlimited amount of time," Shapiro said. "But at a certain point, we may have to make a judgment that the diplomacy will not work."

The U.S. envoy spoke on Tuesday. The Associated Press obtained a recording of his remarks on Thursday.

The five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany are gearing up to for a May 23 meeting with Iran in Baghdad. Shortly after the meeting, the U.N. atomic agency is to release its latest report card on Iran's nuclear efforts.
In Tehran on Thursday, top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili warned against Western pressure at next week's talks, which are a follow-up to negotiations in Istanbul last month that all sides praised as positive.

"Cooperation is what we can talk about in Baghdad," Jalili said in comments broadcast on Iranian state TV.

"Some say time is running out for the talks," he added. "I say time for the (West's) pressure strategy is running out."

Four rounds of U.N. sanctions have failed to persuade Iran to halt its uranium enrichment, a process that has civilian uses but is also key to bomb-making. But recent U.S. and European measures, including an oil embargo and financial and banking sanctions, have bludgeoned Iran's economy by curtailing its ability to carry on economic transactions with the international community.

Israel says a nuclear weapon in the hands of Iran would threaten the Jewish state's survival and has waged a fierce diplomatic campaign against the Iranian nuclear program for years. Israel cites Iranian calls for Israel's destruction, Iran's arsenal of missiles, and its support for anti-Israel militant groups.

Senior officials have expressed skepticism about the sanctions' effectiveness, and believe Tehran is using the talks to stall the international community as Iran moves ever closer to a nuclear bomb.

The United States has urged Israel to refrain from attacking, at least at this point. Tough new economic sanctions are to go into effect over the summer, and American officials fear an Israeli strike could set off a regional war without significantly setting back the Iranian program.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu argues the negotiations will fail unless Iran agrees to halt all uranium enrichment, ship its current stockpile of enriched uranium out of the country and dismantle an underground enrichment facility near the city of Qom.

Maj. Gen. Ido Nehushtan, who until a few days ago commanded Israel's air force, said in a Jerusalem Post interview Thursday that the air force is prepared for any scenario, including striking Iranian nuclear facilities.

Israel's military chief told the Associated Press last month that other countries as well as Israel have readied their armed forces for a potential strike against Iran's nuclear sites.

Iran is still years away from obtaining a nuclear weapon capable of reaching any critical strategic location.  The best policy is to simply wait them out.  Iran boasts a VERY large younger population(about 60% are under 30) that are generally western-friendly and educated.  The old-guard religious Mullahs will die out and/or have their power diminished by the new generation coming up to replace them in all seats of power.  The bluster, threats, and sabre-rattling are spewed out by the old fanatics who are not representative of the populace as a whole.

Iran claims traces of enriched uranium a 'technical issue'
Published May 26, 2012
Associated Press

TEHRAN, Iran –  A top Iranian nuclear negotiator said traces of enriched uranium discovered at an underground bunker came from a "routine technical issue," the country's official IRNA news agency reported on Saturday.

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Tehran's envoy to the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency, was responding to a report by the nuclear watchdog in which it said it had found radioactive traces at an Iranian site.

The uranium found was at level that is slightly closer to the threshold needed to arm nuclear missiles than Iran's previous highest-known enrichment grade.

The IAEA said Friday in the report that it was asking Tehran for a full explanation about the traces. But the report was careful to avoid any suggestion that Iran was intentionally increasing the level of its uranium enrichment.

Iran said the find was a technical glitch, according to the report. Analysts and diplomats said Iran's version sounded plausible
Soltanieh said the issue was blown out of proportion for political reasons.

"This issue shows that some intend to damage the existing constructive cooperation between Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency," he was quoted as saying.

The West suspects Iran is pursuing a weapons program. Tehran denies the charge, saying its nuclear program is aimed at peaceful purposes like power generation and cancer treatment.

Iran starts war games after being hit with sanctions over its nuclear program
Published July 02, 2012
FoxNews.com

Days after being hit with more tough sanctions over its controversial nuclear program, Iran has started new war games simulating an attack on foreign bases in the desert region.

The three day exercise, called Great Prophet 7, involves firing “tens of different missiles” at bases modeled after United States military installations in countries like Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards military force told IRNA, AFP reports.

One ballistic missile in the test, the Shahab-3, has a range of 1,200 miles – enough to strike Israel or southern Europe.

Iran is staging the exercise following warnings that it would counter-attack US or Israeli targets if its nuclear facilities were hit.

Iran has long-claimed its nuclear program is for peaceful intentions and for energy, but Western powers have suspected it is intended for weapons development. Israel has hinted at an attack if diplomatic efforts and sanctions fail, the Associated Press reports.

Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who heads Iran’s Revolutionary Guards aerospace division, said the country “will decisively respond to any trouble” brought forth by “adventurous nations,” AFP reports.

“If they (the Israelis) make a move, they will give us a pretext to obliterate them from the face of the Earth,” Hajizadeh also told IRNA.

The next round of talks aiming to resolve the nuclear dispute are scheduled to take place Tuesday in Istanbul, involving representatives from Iran, the US, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia, AFP reports.

On Thursday, the US increased restrictions on foreign companies working with Iran’s central bank, while the European Union enacted an embargo Sunday on Iranian crude oil.

The embargo also prevented European Union companies from providing insurance to tankers carrying Iranian oil to other countries, the AFP reports.

The pair of moves have already cut Iran’s oil exports by 40 percent, according to data released by the International Energy Agency, but Iran disputes the claim.

Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee responded to the sanctions Monday by drafting a bill that urges Iran to stop all oil tankers – regardless of nation – from passing through the Strait of Hormuz if they are supplying crude to countries that support the sanctions, Reuters reports.

More than 17 million barrels of oil pass through the waterway each year.

Iran has periodically conducted war games to flaunt its firepower, most recently in the Strait of Hormuz. The Great Prophet 7 missile exercise echoes similar tests conducted in 2009.

US Sends Ships, Fighter Jets to Brace for Iran Threat
Tuesday, 03 Jul 2012
By Jim Meyers

The United States has quietly moved significant new military forces into the Persian Gulf to discourage an Iranian response to new sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic.

The American moves are designed to deter Iran from any attempt to shut the Strait of Hormuz and to increase the United States’ ability to strike into Iran if necessary, The New York Times reports in a front-page story on Tuesday.

The increased American forces include minesweepers and stealth jets. And a Pentagon official warned that if Iran’s navy harasses American vessels, “We’ll put them on the bottom of the gulf.”

A European Union oil embargo meant to pressure Iran over its nuclear program came into effect on Sunday, and on Monday Iran announced it would consider legislation to disrupt marine traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

The legislation calls for the Iranian military to block any oil tanker on its way to countries that no longer buy Iranian crude because of the embargo.

During Iran’s war with Iraq in the 1980s, Iran attacked tankers and other commercial traffic to disrupt Iraq’s oil shipments and threaten shipments from Arab states supporting Iraq. Iran also laid mines intended to disrupt traffic, and the United States launched mine-clearing operations and attacks on the Iranian Navy by American warships.

On Tuesday, Iran test-fired several ballistic missiles capable of striking American bases in the region as well as Israel. Iran claimed the surface-to-surface missiles hit their targets after travelling 800 miles, The Associated Press reported.

America’s Fifth Fleet is based in Bahrain, 120 miles from Iran, and Israel is about 600 miles away.

The U.S. Navy has now doubled the number of minesweepers assigned to the region, to eight.

“The message to Iran is, ‘Don’t even think about closing the strait,” the Pentagon official told The Times. “We’ll clear the mines. Don’t even think about sending your fast boats out to harass our vessels or commercial shipping. We’ll put them on the bottom of the gulf.”

The Pentagon has sent additional F-22 stealth warplanes and older F-15 aircraft to two bases in the Persian Gulf, and carrier strike groups are always on patrol in the region.

The Navy has also moved a converted amphibious transport and docking vessel, the Ponce, into the Persian Gulf. It would serve as a “logistics and operations hub for mine-clearing,” according to the Times, and has a medical suite, helicopter deck, and bunks for combat troops.

And while U.S. troops have been withdrawn from Iraq, the Pentagon still maintains a force equal to a combat brigade in Kuwait.

The West suspects Iran is seeking to build nuclear weapons, and the Islamic Republic has resisted all attempts to force it to give up enrichment of uranium.

Israelis killed in Bulgaria bus terror attack, minister says
By the CNN Wire Staff
updated 3:10 PM EDT, Wed July 18, 2012

(CNN) -- A deadly explosion on a bus carrying Israeli tourists at an airport in Bulgaria is "clearly a terrorist attack," Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Wednesday.

"We have several people killed and dozens of wounded people," Barak said.

He said the attack was probably initiated by a group under the auspices of "either Iran or other radical Muslim groups" and named Hezbollah and Hamas as likely suspects.

"We are in a continued fight against them. We are determined to identify who sent them, who executed (the attack) and to settle the account," Barak said.

Vania Valkova, director of the Bulgarian interior ministry press office, said that at least six people were killed and about 30 injured in the explosion in a parking lot outside Burgas Airport, on the Black Sea coast.

Bulgaria's interior minister, who is at the scene, is considering all scenarios, including that of a terrorist attack, she said.

Another spokeswoman for the interior ministry said one possibility is that an explosive device could have been on the bus, but authorities cannot be sure of it.

A forensic team has begun an investigation at the scene, but much work remains to be done, she said. One bus was on fire after the blast.

Four people died at the scene and one in a hospital, the spokeswoman said. It was not clear what happened to the sixth victim.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pointed the finger at Iran, saying it has been behind a string of recent attempted attacks on Israelis in Thailand, India and Georgia, among others.

"All the signs (are) leading to Iran," he said, according to a statement from his office.

Netanyahu said his country "would respond with force to Iranian terror."

Venelin Petkov, a reporter for bTV in Bulgaria, said that three of those taken to the hospital were in a critical condition.

The Israelis had just arrived from Tel Aviv and were supposed to go to a beach resort about 50 kilometers (30 miles) away, he said.

Local security expert Ivan Boyadjiev said on public Bulgarian National Television that Israel had warned of the possibility of an attack on Israeli citizens in Bulgaria several months ago.

He said it was the first such incident he could remember in Bulgaria.

The explosion comes on the 18th anniversary of the attack on a Jewish community center in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, in which 85 people were killed.

Argentina's top prosecutor last year blamed Iran for the 1994 attack, which also injured about 300 people. Israel also holds Iran responsible for the attack. Tehran has denied any connection to the bombing, which it has condemned.

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon told Israel Radio Wednesday, "We cannot confirm yet that this is a terrorist incident, but Iran and Hezbollah have been responsible for incidents like this in the past."

The tourists' plane landed in Bulgaria at 5 p.m., the Israeli Foreign Ministry said.

Oren Katz, who was on a bus next to the one that blew up, together with his wife and three children, described a bloody scene.

"The moment we got on (the bus), we heard a very loud explosion. It was the third bus next to us. Everyone started running in all directions. There was a big chaos," he said.

"We took our children with us and ran as far as we could away from the explosion. My oldest daughter is handicapped, so I decided to run back in order to pick up her wheelchair.

"There was a big blaze of fire, and we were not allowed to come near. Suddenly, I noticed an unconscious woman laying next to me, very close to the burning bus. I picked her up together with another man, and we managed to drag her out of the fire that was about to catch her body in seconds.

"I cannot forget the sight of body parts scattered around the bus. Ambulances and fire trucks have just started to arrive."

Katz, who then ran back to his family so they could get to the safety of their hotel, said he saw at least six people around him who were injured and bloodied.

"I was not able to see anything of what was happening inside the bus that exploded. It was burning heavily," he added.

The travelers were on seven buses outside the terminal; they had arrived on the same flight from Israel, Katz said.

The Jewish Federations of North America, an umbrella group for local Jewish groups across the United States, offered its condolences to the victims of Wednesday's blast.

"We are shocked and saddened by the bus bombing targeting innocent young Israelis traveling in Bulgaria," said Kathy Manning, chairwoman of the board of trustees, in a written statement.

"On behalf of The Jewish Federations, we offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and stand shoulder to shoulder with all of the Jewish People in condemning this horrific act of violence."

By Jim Meyers

Israel will act “decisively and without hesitation or restraint” if Syria transfers any chemical weapons to the terrorist organization Hezbollah, Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman declares.

Liberman also said Syria’s transfer of chemical weapons to Hezbollah would be a “justification for war.”

Speaking at a press conference at the EU-Israel Association Council meeting in Brussels on Tuesday, Liberman said the transfer of some of Syria’s stockpile of chemical and biological weapons to anti-Israel Hezbollah would make tensions in the region “a completely different ballgame,” adding that “we hope for the understanding and cooperation of the international community,” the Jerusalem Post reported.

Also on Tuesday, Israeli Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz said that the Jewish state could face a large-scale conflict in the aftermath of an attack against Syria’s chemical weapons.

Gantz told the Israeli Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that the challenge for Israel is to identify the appropriate moment to take action, if needed, to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons and keep them from falling into the hands of terrorist groups like Hezbollah.

He said Syrian military forces are guarding the chemical weapons stockpile “and have even increased security so it will not fall into rogue hands, although this does not mean it will stay that way. We need to take into consideration what will remain after we act and whose hands it will fall into.”

Syria acknowledged for the first time on Monday that it had chemical and biological weapons and said it could use them if foreign countries intervened in the ongoing rebellion there.

Damascus has not signed a 1992 international convention that bans the use, production or stockpiling of chemical weapons, but Syrian officials in the past had denied it had any weapons stockpiles.

"Given the escalation of violence in Syria, and the regime's increasing attacks on their people, we remain very concerned about these weapons," White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said on Monday.

The Global Security website, which collects published intelligence reports and other data, says the weapons Syria produces include the nerve agents VX, sarin and tabun.

Gantz expressed concern that deteriorating conditions in Syria could threaten the military’s ability to safeguard the chemical weapons supplies, according to the Post.

He noted that an estimated 12,000 Syrian soldiers and officers have already defected, including a number of senior officers.

“It is not just that they do not have commanders,” he said, “but it will also impact the soldiers’ performance over time.”

yeah they've been at the 'brink ' of war for quite a while now.  If it didn't happen in 2007, which cheney at the wheel, I don't see it happening now.

MAYBE if a repub prez gets in the US, who knows.

Seriously, I wish we'd get out of israel's way, and just let them blow up anybody they perceive to be a threat.  Instead of years of brinksmanship, let them blow up plants, take out a few hundred people, and voila, iran stops fcking around with nukes and everyone moves on.   Just let one side win already. if our next door neighbor that hated us (let's pretend cuba) was building a nuke and telling the world they were gonna wipe us off the map, NOBODY would stop us from bombing them.

unleash em, let them protect themselves.

3 Carrier battle groups and a huge majority of NATO's mind sweepers are in the gulf or headed there. We're in a position to support them and we're out of Iraq.
