I have my own business, and while it is great to think you are the boss, sometimes that is not true. I have employees, but am always working for someone, whether it be a GC or a municipality/govt agencey(I am in construction related field). the old adage is true, sometimes you own the business, and sometimes it owns you. There are nights when you just can't turn it off, and you stress about bids, or how you are going to finish upcoming projects, or payroll etc. I very rarely don't have anything on the books, but I am lucky that way. I know how to bid work, and am willing to travel. I am sending a crew to Picayune, MS next month(I am in Va), but there is money in it, and hey, I'm not going. Seriously though, as much as it can get pretty hairy sometimes, I wouldn't trade it for anything. I like being responsible for how my life ends up, and providing for myself. I live decent, have savings, etc, and plan to be able to retire by 50(I am 30 now). I worked in corporate America, and while it can be great, anyone who thinks that you have job stability is a fool. I have seen many laid off because in the end,you are just a number. I guess it all depends on what you want, and how much shit you are willing to put up with. I put up with alot, but am compensated well for it. I say, if you are smart, have an idea, and are serious about it, go for it.
