Coach is a hard working successful man. He is the classic example of the American dream.  How he did it with his limited mental capacities escapes me. But I digress....What was I saying again?

I started working for myself at 20, turning 47 this month. Plenty of hard times but no regrets. My advice is to find something you love doing then work out a way to make a living from it.

It feels like you never really work at all. I still look forward to coming to my gym(s) every day and now love the challenge of expanding the businesses and expos/contests that I run. It is pretty satisfying when you get it right, even if it takes a long time to get there.

Two pieces of advice
1.  Never quit or give up on yourself
2.  Dont worry about what you can't do, worry about what you can do.

Live your dream, life is short.

There is no known correlation between a person's employment status and intellect.
Only you would believe there was...lol

I have my own business, and while it is great to think you are the boss, sometimes that is not true.  I have employees, but am always working for someone, whether it be a GC or a municipality/govt agencey(I am in construction related field).  the old adage is true, sometimes you own the business, and sometimes it owns you.  There are nights when you just can't turn it off, and you stress about bids, or how you are going to finish upcoming projects, or payroll etc.  I very rarely don't have anything on the books, but I am lucky that way.  I know how to bid work, and am willing to travel.  I am sending a crew to Picayune, MS next month(I am in Va), but there is money in it, and hey, I'm not going.  Seriously though, as much as it can get pretty hairy sometimes, I wouldn't trade it for anything.  I like being responsible for how my life ends up, and providing for myself.  I live decent, have savings, etc, and plan to be able to retire by 50(I am 30 now).  I worked in corporate America, and while it can be great, anyone who thinks that you have job stability is a fool.  I have seen many laid off because in the end,you are just a number.  I guess it all depends on what you want, and how much shit you are willing to put up with.  I put up with alot, but am compensated well for it.  I say, if you are smart, have an idea, and are serious about it, go for it.

Coach, I've been reading your posts ever since I discovered getbig, more than a year ago....

and pretty much everything you write has to do, in one way or another, with re-enforcing and justifying your tremendous biases. I wonder if you are even capable of approaching something objectively in abstract terms and not automatically think about how this applies to your own life situation.

From what you write, it looks as if you are enjoying some measure of success. Good on you. I imagine that knowledgeable coaches who do not abuse  their trainees but also do rehab will always be in demand.

But the main hurdle in working self-employed is that you are massively susceptible to economic downturns. Small business, like the ones most self-employed people own, are the first to suffer during recessions and crashes. And we've already had two of those in the last decade. If you work for corporations etc, it's true, you'll have to put with your measure of shit. But your job will be more secure had you been on your own, come what may.

Raymondo...do you know how often I'm attacked on here for speaking my mind? I responded to apply85 because it was a direct attack on me and I responded. (go back to his post). As one of probably a 1000 trainers on here I responded in defense of what I do as a trainer. Do you think if I were in another business I would be posting about it? No..probably not.

But as for the highlighted, while you are correct in seeing a down turn in bad economic times, as I've stated many many times in the past, you have to position your business to be able to handle those down times. It's a part of a good long term business strategy no matter what the business. I would say 9 out of 10 times businesses fail in a bad economy (or even in a good economy) because of having too much debt. If you limit or even take away that debt profits my go down but you don't have the burden of debt with creditors breathing down your neck and can you easily survive a downed economy. Thats in a small nutshell. You still have income.

no it's not economic downturns, economic downturns happen not very often, it's the every day variance of business and lack of stability that is difficult... some months u make money some months you lose money, that's right LOSE, who goes to work to lose money? People who own their own businesses... personal trainers again are not a part of this group, they risk no capital, they invest almost nothing, they are like massagers who go to people's homes instead of working in someone's office, the difference is really arbitrary

People who make their sole living being a good PT do take risks and they do invest...they have to. PT's that have their own studios or small gyms take risks. Even though I have other trainers that train our general clientele out of one facility I have another that I train most of my athletes out of (soon to be bigger). ANYTIME you decide to go out on your own you're taking a risk. If you're the type of PT that just in it for the extra money...then yes, there is very little investment but it's an investment none the less. Time is an investment, setting up your office, bookkeeping, marketing, etc, etc..is all an investment.

And since you lumped me in that category, I invest an average of $40-50k per year in profits back into my business.

if you own ur own studio you are a studio owner, not longer just a personal trainer, the personal training is nothing, if you do not put soemthing called capital into a business, you are insulting business owners by calling yourself self employed, this is what makes being self employed fucking risky...

if you think time is an investment, this means everyone is a business owner right, even the guy working a mdconalds cash register because he invests his time right, lol, go do your training instead of arguing with me

Debating with you is easier. I'm just sitting here doing paper work while bullshitting on here. Here's quick definition of self-employment........you work for yourself. Hahaha!

nobody fucking works for themselves, your client pays you to complete a service, you are working for them, this work for yourself, being your own boss, these are phrases of arrogance... to be honest I never even insulted you, I said ur first post in this thread is rubbish, your posts are mostly shit anyways... time is an investment? hell no it isn't, everyone has fucking time, to say that ur time is an invenstment.... this is what people tell themselves to feel confident, like their time is important lol, if people want to own their own businesses in order to say these things, in order to talk shit, they are in for it. If you are a personal trainer, and you have to pay rent and almost no one wants to be for your time because lets face it your job has little value, and you think you've found a potential client... trust me you will kiss that client's ass harder than you've ever kissed any boss's ass, self employed - LOL
