Chick, Flex mag said back in the 80's that Benaziza's first contest was the world championships, which he won and turned pro. he was from Algeria and because they had no national contest he automatically got to represent his country. i think they even said his second contest was the mr. O.

We did almost compete...back in 1987, Nationals...my National debut. I remember seeing him in person at the show, but he didnt end up competing (of course)...I ended up in 5th.  Phil Hill won the HW class, Shawn Ray the Overall

If memory serves,, Vic won some made up Mr. Nigeria show, which was the first time it was staged...and was trying to get a pro card from it, which was denied from Manion, as he would have needed to go on to the Worlds as you mentioned...

ya, seemed trumped up, there are a lot of countries in Europe that have amazing bodybuilders and their nationals aren't pro qualifiers.  IFBB should have just given him a 'special invite' to the Olympia like they did for Mendenhall, who didn't use it anyway.  and have the Nigerian champs all been offered pro cards since?  no

I don't remember MM ever getting a special invite....perhaps Joe WANTED him to get one, but it would have been frowned upon.  I do remember Jeff King wanting one based on his merits of his AAU titles, but he too didn't feel like putting it on the line at the Nationals...

certain NABBA universe winners were given IFBB pro cards, others were not. seems like european NABBA universe winners like Buchanon, Kawak, Clairmonte, Fox, even John Brown - an American living in Europe. but Americans who won it had to come back and qualify even though they were already MR. Universe over there. Mike Quinn is the only NABBA U winner that i can think of that came back to win the USA's.  King said no.

Thats because of the weird system the europeans have...you have to be given a letter of reccomondation from the IFBB affiliate in whatever country, even after you win the world championships...

Not quite...Its obvious youve never competed, because you still cant see the obvious.

I was never trying to "play the system"...I was trying to EARN a pro card....by beating the BEST, not back-dooring my way to one by "playing the system", getting the second pro card, getting it from the Masters div...etc.

What made the card valuable was the fact that I did it...legitimately...by winning not just my class, but the OVERALL title...nothing was handed to me, gifted to me, or made up for me.  Vic Richards never faced ANYONE...just some ficticious show, against a bunch of guys who had never seen the inside of a gym...which gave him ZERO respect.  

That said...if you never step on stage to COMPETE as a Pro, then youre not a pro, simple as that...all he was, was "Pro eligible"...as he was never granted a card, and never competed....

kind of like having your lerners permit to drive, but not passing the test...you STILL dont own a valid drivers license...

He would have had to go on to the World Championships, as has been already stated...He didnt, and wasnt "granted" any pro card without going through the proper qualification process....
