I have never competed in a powerlifting meet but thinking about entering one some day. After reading some of the numbers people have put up, I might not be ready and get my ass handed to me. My lifts are going really well in the gym but probably not ready for competition. I'll just keep my ass in the gym for now. 8)

Don't let these weights keep you from competing.  I've won bench meets before with a 400 lb. bench press before.  I've also gotten 2nd or 3rd with a 525 lb. Bench.  The competition is with yourself more than anyone else.  I lift raw, and I compete in open meets.  So when I go in, I realize that a guy that I'm stronger than may use a bench shirt to put up a bigger lift.  I just try to lift more than I did in my last contest.

I use the meets to validate my lifts.  It also motivates my training to have a set date to put it all on the line.  I personally usually put up my biggest numbers in meets.  I feed off of the crowd.

Over the last two days I benched 300 (easy) and squatted 440 (also pretty easy) so I think my numbers are really closer to 310 and 450. I turn eighteen this Sunday (12/18/05) and I weigh about 270. How much more do these lifts need to come up before I can be a solid competition powerlifter?

Thanks for the motivation bigdog! My friends have been asking if I'm going to compete and some recommend I should. I just broke my squat record this past Friday with 605 using only knee wraps. My bench is probably 400 with a pause (no shirt). I need to start doing some dead lifts though, but I've been naturally strong at those.

It is good to hear that you go raw and that is what I like about lifting. I just started using knee wraps for the purpose of walking the weight out of the rack and not having my knee buckle. I know what you mean about having a set date for doing a big lift. That is what I do every so often in the gym when I feel I'm ready for a big lift. All I could think about last week was squatting the 605 and a couple of my buddies came to watch which made it even more fun.

How do you get involved in the meets and where do you find them?

Wells, you are a FREAK...............you grow on pork chops, and enlarge. You are in the top of you class, due to the fact I know you are not taking anything stronger than enlarge, which no disrespect is not much. If you ever did mess with some real gear, you would scare small children, and if you could stay injury free, theres no telling what your lifts would be. By the way, you had 625 in my opinion by the way you came up out of the hole on that PR.

Hey Fatass, thanks for the compliment. I don't know what it is I take that works but something is working right, it could be the n-large, the pork chops, celltech, or the skim milk injections, I don't know. But I'm having fun and ready show people that great lifts can be achieved without steroids. Yeah I wonder what I would be like if I did take a cycle or two of the gear, but I've came this far without it, I feel that would be the easy way out if I did take it.

Yeah, I probably should of tried 625, but I was still in shock that I just did 605. I will go for 625 in a couple weeks, hope you show up. I'm going to try 3 sets of 5 at 530 this week, we'll see how it goes.

Well, I had always been natural, so input from a tall person (6ft 3in, 240 to 250)

DL: 550ish, stiff leg over 500
Squat: never got into it but could leg press like 1600
Bench:  maybe 360 max, 225 for...say 18 or so.

age: 18
height: 5'9"
weight: 210-220(not sure, my scale's pretty old and defunct)
current lifts:
bench: 365
squat: 540
dead:about 585

though, my training style is drastically different than it used to be.  as a sophomore in highschool, i trained all year mainly for strength.  i reached a weight of 245.  these were my best lifts back then:

bench:315
squat:630
deadlift:600

Completely natural.  Believe it or not.  I don't really care.

im embarrassed as fuck now seeing all those numbers! anyway, ive never lifted for long enough periods for my strength to increase but heres my best lifts:

bench - 175 (my shoulders and triceps are wrecked)

squat - 315 * 3 (1rm = 350ish?)

dead - 315 * 3

i lift for a few months then lose interest for about a year, so i start back from scratch. I dont even consume half the protein i should lol

How many reps with what weight do you do on deads? How many times a week do you train deads? I have had great results doing 3 weeks heavy and 1 week light only doing deads once a week. My max is 560 so I do 2 sets of 5 reps with 535 on my heavy weeks. Try lifting a weight that you know you can get at least 3 times but trying for 5. When you get comfortable with that weight after a couple weeks, add 5 to 10 pounds. On the light week, pick a weight that you know you can lift more than 5 reps and burn yourself out giving yourself some conditioning. I'm not a professional at all and don't claim to be a know it all. All I know is what works for me. I listen to other people advice and try it with alittle of what I know. Just trying to help!

well i'm 305 now and not training but i can go into the basement and give 310 on the bench 475 on the squat(kaz style quads no half squats) with no training an about the same on the dead,i can overhead press 225 sitting down.i can close the #2 captains of crush now for 5 reps in each hand now.at 225 to 250 natural the lifts were 350 and 550 and around the same for the dead.that was three years ago natural and i was training pretty hard.but i don;t train coinsistsently i'm always off and on never sticking to it year round.there's no point in making  lifting your living unless you juice.it just gives you so much more power.look at barry bonds and what cattle steroids and stuff can do to you.pinch grip 25's smooth side and i can plate curl a 35 pounder but i've been training my grip.i like to see what i could do juiced with someone training me year round but it';s just not worth it.you guys have been forgetting to say if you juiced or didn;t.

Never juiced and never plan too! Very proud of my accomplishments! If you juice one time, all the years you worked for are for nothing! People see you as a cheater and you took the easy way! I'm not going to do that to myself!

4 - time Washington State ADFPA/USAPL 242 lb class powerlifting champion. Won state title in the 80's, 90's, 2000....3 decades. LIFETIME natural. Totalled International Elite - Highest Drug-Free ranking. Tested 15 times........0 - positives

Competition bests:
Squat - 804.5
Bench - 501
Deadlift - 727

Gym bests:
Squat - 750x3 600x10 585x12 500x20 405x30
Bench - 475x3 405x8 315x20
Deadlift - 600x7 500x10 405x15

These are my bests. They are accurate and not exaggerated. The gym lifts are slightly higher as I trained at around 250-255 lbs, dropping to 242 to compete. Squats were done "ass to the floor". These are not "sets", they were done at different times in different years.
