It is not rocket science. -Makes no sense to pay someone to install laminate that only cost $1.50 a sq. ft. Buy extra, to cover your screw ups should you even have any. I have faith in you. You can do it yourself.

I want to rip up about 2,000 sq. ft. of carpet and replace it with hardwood flooring. Most of what I have priced that I like is about $5 to $6 a sq ft. not installed. I expect it will cost me about $9 to $10 a sq. ft. total for product and installation. Then I am faced with buying a couple of new area rugs to augment the orientals we currently have in storage. It's a big expense, but my heart is in my home.

I'm actually a really great carpenter.  Built nice cabinets, laid tongue and groove flooring, repaired antique furniture, etc...

I absolutely agree, and I will never pay people to do something I actually enjoy.

You may not believe me, but you can do this yourself!  Get yourself a nice table saw and miter saw.  Make sure all bases are covered before you get started.  Plan, plan, plan...

I love the 19th century Victorian chairs almost more than that lovely old floor!

Laminate
so 20th century
horrible chipped or mdf painted board that costs more to have laid than bought (now where else in life could such a sentiment apply)

Laminate has come a long way.....although if it is a low traffic area and you have no pets, go with real wood.

Make sure you leave about a quarter-inch of space from the wall...laminate tends to expand a little bit....putting it flush up against the wall can cause the middle boards to start popping up.

it is better to run the planks in the direction of traffic flow rather than at right angles. that way there are less joints crossed by dirty shoes and any gaps that open up (shrinkage, chipping, etc) will be less obvious, Quadrent beading or skirting board , to cover the 1/4" gap another commentator mentioned may cost almost as much as the laminate

I suck at carpentry stuff. I'll get that out of the way right now. I've installed laminate myself and I've bought installation included with my original purchase for very little added cost. I'll personally go with paying someone to do it nowadays. What takes me 4 days and a lot of anguish to do, gets done by a team of "professionals" in hours and it's a much better job than I would have been able to do.

I used to do all my own remodeling/household repairs. This was when I was in my thirties, fourties and fifties. These days, I prefer to let the pros do it for me. My wife sometimes remarks, "What happened to the guy who fixed everything himself?" "He got old and tired of doing it," I say.

Typically, if your laminate's regular price is under 3 buck s a foot you have an avg or below avg product.

I got it for $1.50, it was hard as hell to lock together but it looks pretty nice and seems to be standing up well.

I'll never do this shit again. lol

My office looks nice, i'll post a pic later

One trusts that no animals were harmed in the laying process
and at least some thing got laid, whither across or with the grain.
