College is never a waste but for your career it wasn't necessary. When you started police work agencies were giving sign on bonuses to join them. Now some want a four year degree and a stellar backround.

yeah that exactly why ill be joining the reserve when i have my diploma in hand. a couple years in the service and i can either get a job in policing, or else stay in the military if it suites me. Im doing my practicum at a homeless shelter that takes in anyone, drug addicts, mentally disordered, etc, its been the best life experience i could have ever asked for so far, and when i finish there, along with some military experience, i will be able to get a job anywhere in the country. I cant justify spending more money to finish my degree when what I really need is relevant life experience to get hired. School can be useful, but spending huge amounts of loan money with no promise of a job afterwards seems like a poor life choice.

Once was to be accepted to a police academy (they make surprisingly good money here), and both interviewing officers
said they were impressed.
In ROTC in college, a Major pulled my into his office just to tell me that he had been very impressed with my interview, and
had only come across 2 other people in his entire career that made that sort of impression on him.

None of it mattered. I started my own business and it went great for years. I am just tried of working 6-7 days a week,
and sometimes 20 hour days.

I don't need to lower my standards, I already said I would be ecstatic if I had been offered 45-50k starting after college.
Hell, I might be interested in that now.

My thoughts are that if you aren't going for something specific, like Lawyer, Doctor, etc.,
then all college is is a place to prove that you are devoted to getting a bunch of shit done,

Lol, I work for Wal-Mart. I work on the distribution center side of the business.  They start Internal managers at 45k(not including bonus) which means you could negotiate for more.  It's not great pay, but it's better then most people these days.

i worked there once too, contrary to popular belief there are actually good people working there that are just down on their luck. no shame in taking a shitjob, but it is still a shitjob and no one can live on those wages (at the minimum wage level anyways).

not really much people can do about that though, as it's just bad luck getting stuck in that position for a lot of people, and since wealth is a zero-sum system, not everyone can have a middle class or higher salary and the usa economy is shifting away from manufacture of physical goods to manufacture of intellectual property shrinking a lot of the middle class in the process.

I live in the mid west in canada. we have more jobs here then workers. the economy is red hot and they say we are getting a new potash mine every year for the next 15 years to feed global demand. We also are still pulling shit loads of oil out of the ground and have strong gold, diamond and mineral deposits.

 The downside?? It gets really cold in the winter, like fuckin freezing -50 last month for 3 days straight. But i have never made more money in my life, and continue to rake in more every year(in 4 years have increased my gross income by $40,000 and started 2 new busniess)

 My suggestion to anyone looking for work?? move here, it would be worth the struggle to get a visa and you can learn to deal with the cold. meanwhile ill be up here cleaning up!!

Id agree, seems people in my age group expect to be handed 100k jobs and none of them want to do the footwork, they all want everything handed to them and they dont want to work for any of it.
Were gonna be in trouble when all those positions need to be filled, and we dont have qualified people to fill them.

and I couldn't find shit for work.
Joining the military as an officer has crossed my mind over and over, especially when I get
fed up with the stress of funning my own business that is struggling in this recession.

I think there is a lot of opportunity in the military if you show them are are wanting more than
the average Joe.

that's actually a decent wage, i know wal-mart managers can make a shitload of money in bonuses depending on how the store does. like the regional manager can make over 200k/yr with bonuses

that's sooo true. They're lost of law school graduates and ones the just passed the bar applying for paralegal jobs. The last two firms I interviewed with (before my new recent job at a firm) was between me and a lawyer. They chose the lawyer. So he does the same thing i do with the same pay.

One of the major problems of this generation is a lack of work ethic and blaming everyone for their lack of wealth. Do you think 30 years ago it was easy to earn a living if you were young?  Yes, the economy is bad but saying whoa is me and everyone owes me will get you no where.

 I don't know any successful person that didn't pay their dues in life and yes start at the bottom. There are so many examples. One guy I know is a construction worker that worked many 16 hour plus days and weekends/holidays. He started his own very tiny construction company.  Now at 47 he bids and gets 50 million dollar plus jobs and employs 100's of people building bridges and roads.

I know I will get a lot fu's on this but the truth hurts. Being a slacker is one of the major problems with this generation.

fwiw i have a lot of friends just out of college who took quite a while to find jobs, some of them have been graduated for over a year, some two years, and havent found a full time engineering gig

i can only imagine what its like right now for philosophy or psychology majors


my friends who studied economics or finance related actually are doing somewhat decent right now
