Noooooot necessarily under the current uncertainty of the future in many places.

Depends also what country you live in. USA and southern Europe are most probably going to take big hittage economically which automatically means depreciation in values of real estate as unemployment raises.

By renting an apartment now and patiently waiting for the prices to drop you can save big bucks.

My rent plus utilities is roughly 1/7 of my net monthly income. The real expense is food/entertainment/clothes.

Haha, even if you're not serious (which I hope you aren't), this is not funny - many people really think that.

Look at what happened in USA few years back when real estate bubble burst.
Look at Spain now... homes are sold at half the price they were sold sum' time ago... and it keeps fallin'

All of my bills together(rent, cell, electric, water, tv) are about 1/3 of my take home each month.  I have been as high as 1/2 when I made less money and that is as high as I ever want to go.

sharing rent is a good idea, yet it is awkward at times, but if you work the same job you can save on transportation costs too.  It's truly strange how people accepts being scamming out of our money for the oil and electricity.

for instance i could get an appartment nearly twice as big with two bedrooms instead of once for 20-25% more rent

if i do this with my buddy i save definitely a lot of money

definitely considering this lately

only downside seems that i dont really know if it would be possible to have my girlfriend basically live there as well and in case he gets a girlfriend how that would all work....

but the money factor seems more important than women matters so we dont need to struggle from pay check to pay check

Shit. My mortgage is almost 50% of my income. The first thing I did when i got out of college and got a good job was to buy a new big house in the newest subdivision I could find. Wish I didn't. Why did a guy that didnt have a GF at the time. Need a 4 bedroom house?  :-\ I made one a gym. And still have 2 fucking guest rooms.

rent per month is about 23 percent of month inc. after tax

gas and electrics i dont know but per month it isnt much. maybe its 25-28-ish % altogether

i calculated that when i would do it with my friend at such an appartment, and i'd pay half of rent and electric stuff it would be 27% or so

if i would have to do it by myself in a smaller place it would be more like 50%

soo....

rent appartment with friend? some people have been telling me it's a bad idea if you have a girlfriend but i dont know ... i dont want to be broke

1/3, it could be 1/4th if I made smarter living/working choices.

P.S. I just quit my job, so really it's all my savings.
