what if i do controlled negative, lock arms completely straight for a second and curl up (straight bar)

what are the odds of tearing a bicep like this

Stopping at the bottom locked out takes the tension off the muscle.

not at all, mentzer was right on many things

maybe his actual practical application was madness i dont know

but a lot of his general ideas are true

i said before

over training is more detrimental than under training see this graph

Oh, don't get me wrong...I'm a massive Mentzer fan.

Stopping for a split second or so isn`t gonna` make a hell of a lot of difference....you are totally correct though my friend!  ;)

I agree, pausing consciously for a moment at the bottom actually helps you neuromuscularly set up. I always make sure that I stop and start the movement deliberately and with purpose.

Consistency is the key, not so much training style.  A natural will max out in about 2 years, any gains after that are small and the effort needed to grow becomes unsustainable.  Once this plateau is reached, 1-2 days/week in the gym is enough to sustain.

He quotes it as once a week and for most naturals, believe me, he isn't stating anything crazy. It's tried and tested by myself over the last 7 years with many, many training partners.
I haven't trained more than once a week for 5 years...and yes, I am very muscular and strong.

Well I wouldn't be surprised. I've gone longer than that and made massive improvements when I've reached a sticking point.

Metzer philosophy changed a lot over the yerars, just like his mental stability.

Not a knock on Mike, just the truth.

It`s true also that he built his physique mainly using volume in the early years of his career and then met Jones and the rest is his dogma and Jones dogma doing the talking/promoting to increase Nautilus sales firstly, then to make coin for Mikes Heavy Duty.

main reasons i cannot take the leap of faith of mentzer training is

According to Peter McGough, editor-in-chief of FLEX magazine, stories began to surface of Mentzer exhibiting some very erratic behavior. Stories of him running naked through the streets, directing traffic, telling prophecies about the end of the world, being arrested by the police numerous times and even waiting for aliens to land were all published in magazines at one point or another. Popular bodybuilding writer Dan Duchaine even suggested that Mentzer was drinking his own urine at the time. Mentzer denied this in a 2001 interview with Ironman magazine. Nonetheless, according to McGough, some of these stories are true.[citation needed] Mentzer was also regularly institutionalized between 1985 up until 1990, when he finally kicked his amphetamine habit.

Regardless of that being true or not Wes, for myself and many friends and colleagues I train with or have trained with (I'm talking probably 30-40 people over the years) a Heavy Duty style routine has worked literally wonders and if adapted properly to the individual is the best thing for naturals IMO.

Meh, I don't really take to anecdotal evidence, ESPECIALLY from those within the bodybuilding industry. Even if Mike went through that period, which I believe he probably did have his issues, IMO you can't criticize him for the core principle of his view of training;, aiming to find and/or describe an efficient way of training.  Even if he was wrong, he wasn't dishonest. I spoke to Samir Bannout personally about Mike and he said he was the most HONEST guy he knew and that to quote Samir directly, "EVERYTHING HE SAYS WORKS". I'll get the screenshots of some of my discussions with Samir when I can dig them out. BTW, I'm aware that the Samir quote is anecdotal which is ironic, but you'll just have to take my word for it lol.

Naturals or drug users, you have to train hard if you want to grow. Unless you use stupid amounts of insulin and GH, then any damn thing will, do lol.

What kind of idiot actually likes training? I like the results, not the grind of getting them. Better ways to spend one's time than sweating in a gym for hours each week...

I love training............just an hour or so a day,not counting any cardio if you get busy.

Not a lot of time at all to invest in your body.........you only get one!
