Cholestrol Levels
« on: March 18, 2012, 07:35:04 PM »
Ancillaries are definitely important, we all know that.

without jumping onto cholestrol medication

who here has high levels, what do you do to keep them under control?

and if meds are the way to go, what meds have the best rep? long term effects? short term?

A few years ago my cholesterol was 250, Doc put me on Crestor. Took the Crestor for 3 months, body ached and felt like shit. Retested and was at 227. At that point I decided the statins wasn't worth the sides and decided to stop. Then went on self-prescribed niacin and fish oil. Had my cholesterol tested 2 years later at 189.

Niacin(no-flush) 1000mg/day, did that for a couple of years and have been on 500mg/day for the last two years with no rise in cholesterol. No sides.

Both parents and Grandparents have/had high cholesterol, so it is genetic for me. Even at 250 I was eating a clean diet.

most of the research i've come across also states "genetic" is the key factor with cholestrol levels..

interesting...

i wonder what others input is on medication..

cholesterol meds don't do a whole lot and it's counter productive to stay on statins long term for cardiovascular health.

make sure to just keep your diet in check, and keep the oral abuse to a minimum if you have bad genetics for cholesterol levels. mine were out of range for everything before i even used any gear, there's nothing much i can do.

this is correct, and most tests are inaccurate for determining unhealthy cholesterol levels. high ldl levels and low hdl levels do not intrinsically mean poor cholesterol levels.

naicin plus fish oil is probably going to have the greatest effect on having a positive effect on your cholesterol levels. niacin becomes less and less effective the more often it's used (the flush seems to be important for some reason), so while it's a good supplement it isn't highly effective due to having to cycle it. it really all comes down to genetics though and not much else is going to make a huge difference. get a VAP test and see what percentage of your LDL cholesterol are good vs bad and use your HDL levels as a ratio of your triglycerides, it's more accurate gauge of cardiovascular health.

my doctor nearly shit a brick when he saw my cholesterol levels and wanted to get me on statins asap. i still haven't used them, i think cleaning up the diet + doing cardio is mroe effective anyways and that if statins are employed they should only be used for a short period of time, maybe right after an oral cycle to get hdl levels back up.

My cholestrol was 6.9 (under 4 is normal) doc put me on 10mg crestor and it dropped to 2.9. No aches or pains from it.

cholesterol meds don't do a whole lot

Mine were really high, 20 mg simvastatin daily and after 12-weeks they were nearly ideal. + I haven't had any noticeable negatives. Also 9 € for 100 pills is a pretty good deal.

I read a cholesterol article in Men's Health. It talked about an alternative means of testing that is not the norm in the US. This test tested for the density of LDL. There are two types of LDL, a more dense sticky LDL and a lighter fluffier LDL. The denser version is what sticks to your arteries and the fluffier version is pretty harmless. Without taking this test it stated that if you have higher triglyceride levels you most likely had the denser more dangerous LDL. Even when my cholesterol levels were high my triglycerides were low. So, maybe my risk were lower than my previous Doc realised.

RED YEAST RICE is the only supplement you will need to lower total cholesterol. The following are REAL LIFE results:

My cholesterol fluctuated between 200-220 for yrs.

Three months on 1200mgs of red yeast rice daily and my total cholesterol was at 170.

Three months later, next blood test, my total chlesterol was 160 with NO CHANGE IN DIET, SUPPLEMENT PROTOCOL, OR EXERCISE REGIMEN.

HDL's in the 50's and Tri's under 100.

These are REAL LIFE RESULTS. Don't ever questions blood results. Red yeast rice is as effective as any statin offered by big pharma.
