I wouldn't buy anything other than Asus when it comes to laptops.  The Zenbook, which HTexen mentions is super light, packs a good punch with the i7, 256gb SSD, 13.3" screen, graphics is Intel which isn't all that great but may not be important for your needs.  Only has 4gb of ram though, don't think you can expand it more, but not 100% sure on that.

Asus also makes some really solid "gaming" laptops that may be more in line with what you need, 8gb of ram, Nvidia 3gb video, 17" screens, dual SSD's, etc etc, the G74SX I think is the model.

I bought a killer ASUS.

It could be a gaming computer if I wanted it to. It's got a shitload of power.

It's basically my backup computer now.

I have an HP Pavilion that I've had for years. It took about 6 years of continual use for the video card to finally take a dump and when it did, I just replaced the video chip and coated the wires that typically get too hot. I don't think it will ever break again.

People say they are crap, but this is a standup puter. Got CS5 and the whole Adobe setup on it with room to spare. Maxed the ram. Got 4 sticks, but as a 32bit it maxes at around 75%. It's faster than lightning with T4.

Exactly. Papercut, read page one. The company I work for has spent a ton of money on Lenovo's and they are failing left and right.

ASUS is the shit. best Quality/Price ratio out of any manufacturer. As for tablets, samsung is the best. even the iShits have alot of samsung components in them.

I had one of the original quasimodos and I loved it...........for the few months that it actually worked and wasn't being repaired due to a faulty motherboard. That shit happened three times.

People say - you shouldn't spend so much money on a laptop.... but you can just connect it to an external monitor, and wireless keyboard and mouse and BOOM you got a Desktop when you need it at home and dis-attach it to have a laptop when you're on the go!

About to do just that this week, (will be connecting my laptop to a 32" LCD on my desk!!)

I actually made a mistake this time round. I always used to buy the best laptop on the market and have it for 3-4 years before doing the same thing again.

This time I bought a very nice Sony all in one and a netbook. It actually saved money but for some reason I have never compltely bonded with the all in one (guess so used to laptops) and the netbook is a steaming pile of shit that is so fucking slow it's untrue.

I'm not even planning on use a docking station, just gonna put the screen down on the laptop and put it to the side, connect it via HDMI to the 32" LCD screen, and fire up a wireless keyboard and mouse, gonna be great for gaming!

Either way, when I'm out, 90% of the time I take my Motorola Android Tablet over my laptop.

If I really need to do something windows based... from my tablet I can remote log onto my pc at home and do everything I need to do!  Its great!

Gotcha, great idea. I use my for pretty much work only. I use the laptop monitor for email and my secondary wide-screen monitor for my programs. Then wireless keyboard and mouse.

Work and play here....  I was gonna get secondary monitors and continue using the screen on my laptop (which is 17"), then I just figured if I put a 1080p 32" on my desk it'll be more than plenty and I can just split windows on that!

I really think the next time I come to buy a laptop, whenever that is... I may go the small route (as opposed to my current 17" laptop) and get the 11 inch Alienware M11X  ;D They're overpriced though, but coupons for them and Dell seem to come often!

$600

Dell Studio 2.5 years

Ok, I don't have a graphics card, just the standard Intel Thing-A-Ma-Jig card.

What's the point of spending even $2000 on a laptop? The $1000 ones can pretty much power any application or task.
