Hey, I love those type of movies too.
Have you ever seen 'The Night of the Comet'? It's from the 80s.
I've often wondered why these types of movies appeal to me. I think it might have to do with the simplicity of survival, as opposed to all the seemingly worthless and annoying decisions that must be made in current life. I also think it would be really cool to just go around taking whatever you wanted.
I've been watching 'The Walking Dead' lately and love it. Same concept.
Just added Night of the Comet to my Watch Instantly queue though it looks campy so I am dubious.
I think these kinds of movies appeal to me (and others) because directly or indirectly they prompt us to imagine a world where we think about what is important. Muscles, money, faith, fame, family, food, property, guns, etc... in a real crisis (such as the end of the earth!) all the things that we usually cling to, or ostensibly value, fall away. Characters in the films (and audiences) are prompted to think about what
really matters to us. If we could strip away all the layers of life, what would we find at its core? Who are we... at our core? What do we value... at our core? We may think we know the answers to these questions . . . I don't think we do.
None of us do.
