I opened with it's ALL DRUGS, that is no longer a variable, it is a constant.

You've never had statistics in college?

Let's turn this thing around:

Do any of you here think that a lighter training Cutler is generating less tension in his biceps than a heavier biceps training Yates? (or any two bodybuilders who differ in weights used)

If a direct measurement of muscular strength generated (which would have to an internal one vs an external one with poundage used) were to be done for each of them, I'm 100% sure they would be a lot closer together than the differing weights on the bar would make you believe.

Hence Cutler doing 50 lbs barbell curls might in practice be exposing the same load on his biceps as 100 lbs barbell curling Yates.

I didn't say 50 lbs isn't 50 lbs or whatnot. But in this context, what you do with those 50 lbs is what counts.

i know what you mean 50 lbs can be made to feel heavier by slowing down the motion and feeling the movement more. the mind muscle connection which is so hard to truly achieve.

Among other things yes. But give Cutler a 100 lbs barbell instead of that 50 lbs barbell, he would be 'lifting more weight' but wouldn't necessarily be training his biceps any harder.

I agree with Scott Abel that a lot of bodybuilders, even though they get stronger over time, use less training weight over time, simply because they've mastered the contracting of muscles better.

(of course the drug intake will likely also grow over time!)

I opened with it's ALL DRUGS and genetics, that is no longer a variable, it is a constant. Nothing else matters.

Simply refuses to give up  :D

Without drugs, you are going nowhere, we all know that by now. It is uncontestedly the single most important thing.

But I know for certain more people get lesser results because of training too heavy (heavy as in weight on bar) vs getting lesser results because of training too light. When in doubt, train too light.

But I know for certain more people get lesser results because of training too heavy light and with bad form (heavy as in weight on bar) vs getting lesser results because of training too light people who train light but get awesome results because of superior genetics and drugs. When in doubt, train too light heavy for maximal gains, and train lighter if you can get away with it with superior genetics and a lot of drugs.

The people here who've trained for decades will attest that they've gotten better results by training a bit too light, than they had while training a bit too heavy, regardless of drugs which are omnipresent.

Well, no shit, training a little lighter and using good form  will bring the best progress. There is still a difference between going a bit lighter and using good form and still busting your ass, as opposed to grimacing about lifting a 50 pound dumbbell. Sorry, unless Jay was on his 600th rep with that 50 pound barbell, he shouldnt be grimacing. As I said, I have seen teenagers use that same barbell, do 12 reps, and not grimace one bit. Look at that vein in Jays neck. He must be straining pretty hard  :-\

first off.. there are very few exercises that provide a muscle with a "full range of motion"..  must refer to a full range of motion when in truth they are doing a "full range of movement".. if using the bench press as a example the triceps are the weak link for most.. the in essence the triceps give out well before the pecs.. so why utilize the last portion of the movement that fatigues the triceps and leaves the pecs wanting.. would it not be better to stay in the range of movement that puts the most stress on the pecs?

dont confuse the two.. where ever the most tension on the pecs is that is where you should stay.. the full range of motion is only needed in the bench press where it is being judged for powerlifting purposes.. for the purpose of building pecs it is not needed and should not be adhered too.. unless ya want great triceps.. ;)

haha sf1900 laying down the hard truth!

Excellent work!

Sorry, but saying that curling a 50 pound dumbbell will get you that big because of constant tension is utter crap  :-\

I cant stand that dude.  When heathh won his first olympia.  He's got this smiling long jawed asshole hugging the fuck out of him and pointing to him and shit.  He should have shook heaths hand and walked off.  Hugging in posing trunks...wtf!  That shit really got to me.  Well, if you dont think jay is cool, i fucking agree with you.  And brazilian women are fucking awesome.  I would put girls from southerrn cali up against them though..tough choice as to who's the best.  Not to derail the thread...fuck jay...and his crisco sponsored biceps.

Ya, all that student/teacher shit is total bullshit. No doubt Jay's using Phil to stay in the limelight now that Palumboism has attacked Jays upper body.

I have been lifting weights for nearly 40 years. I have been in many a gym. I have seen what the work ethic is like now for the most part and it's sad. No one squats anymore or if they do it's really shallow. Incline barbell and dumbbell presses are really a short range of motion so they can grab the really big weights that in truth they couldn't handle doing it properly. Deadlifts are done from a cage off of pins because if it was on the floor they couldn't pick it up. The leg press is the biggest disgrace. Load a 1000 plus pounds and keep the back board upright and do little shallow knee bends.  What's with all the young men walking on a treadmill?  Lazy fucks.
exactly....right on the money

looks like he's having a hard time with the weight. why would you get photoed with such a puny poundage. he should be ashamed to be useing 50 lb dbs much less a barbell.
Maybe he don't give a fuck, because he is just coming back from bicep surgery??

I was talking about tension tout court, not necessarily "constant tension".

You seem to be unable to grasp the fact that some people are able to contract muscles harder than other people, with or without weights. The better you are at contracting, the less weight you will need/can use. This is so simple yet seemingly very hard to grasp  ;)

Your twinky kid using the same 50 lbs as Jay Cutler will in all likelihood, be contracting WAY less per rep and thus be training less hard as well. You're a fool if yoy think you can equate weight on the bar to what the target muscle is actually generating.

Most strong guys are all leverage and neurological efficiency anyway. Hope this helps.

Oh come on, Ive seen 14 year olds in the gym curl 50 pound barbells without grimacing.
Fucking this! What's the point of being a roid monster if you lift like pussy.
