Get the GED. You will feel better about yourself. Take subjects that interest you in college and you will find that you may actually like studying.

In Oregon, we call junior college, community college. It sounds better. Many people get their associates degrees at a community college because it is less expensive than going to university. Also, community colleges often have more flexible schedules which can be a good thing if you are working and going to school.

A licensed trade would probably be the way to go.  I doubt a licensed union plumber, electrician, refrigeration tech, etc makes less than $80/ hr.  Probably stay away from non-licensed trades like tiling, drywall, carpet/vinyl/flooring, etc.  Carpentry is a maybe, and would give you the easiest transition into business ownership as a builder/GC later on.

There are also non-construction trades here, such as butcher, baker, hairdresser, etc.

You are young. Lots of folks get these kinds of jobs when they are young. I wouldn't say they are bottom of the barrel though. A job's a job....a way to make some money. What you want is a career which is also a way to make money sometimes but also a way to be doing something you actually enjoy.

What kind of carpenter would you like to be? There are carpenters who do heavy work, like framing and there are carpenters who do fine work like cabinet making. Construction trades are often seasonal, which can be something of a disadvantage. On the plus side, one can become a contractor and work for themselves which is sometimes better than working for someone else.

My step dad was a painting contractor. He made really good money. He also worked really hard, often 6 days a week with long hours. When I as a kid in my teens and twenties, like I suspect you are, I worked with my dad. We had a lot of good times working together. However, painting wasn't what I aspired to do for the rest of my life. Still, knowing the trade came in handy when I was otherwise between jobs. I could always land a gig house painting. The money wasn't bad either. The work was seasonal though.
