I am thinking about moving to North Carolina at possibly next year. Company has offices in both Charlotte and Raleigh ( RTP). I will probably go visit both places at some point but which area is actually better for a fella in his mid 30s. Which has more nightlife ( shit to do) culture etc and is safer ( if i wanna raise a family)...i get mixed reviews when i do research

Buddy of mine moved to Cary, NC and loves it.   Said he will never step foot in NYS ever again.

My assistant moved down there a few years ago and works from home via computer network we set up.

Property values though have crashed in a lot of areas, so you can probably get a good deal.

What is the local economy like; esp for you guys who have lived in different parts of NC - how do they compare?

Is there a strong health care industry?

The VA is planning on building a state-of-the-art facility in Kernersville.

my thinking is i can have a better quality of life taking a NY salary to NC. I hear from so many others from big cities than move to places like NC and do a major upgrade

John Deere?

Works for an accounting firm.

He got out of NYC at the right time.

Me?  I went down there for the NHL Allstar game last year and it was real nice, but damn those fuckers are slow.   I also have a thick Bronx NY accent so it was a little strange speaking with the folks down there.

But everyone was nice.  Saw a lot of "Gospel Busses" and packed Denny's though with those fuckers in for the grand slams.

If you're living in the city it doesn't really matter, can't tell the difference living in ATL to Charlotte to San Diego anyhow.

the rest of NC is amazing, mountains full of heritage, best beaches with lighthouses n shit, best tobacco in the world.  the schoolin's fine, they'll learn your kids real right. NASCAR, ric flair, Dale Earnhardt, vince goodrum, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Popcorn Sutton, Cataloochee, Ralph Earnhardt, True Adonis, Cold Mountain, Assville, Nobody, Showstoppa, Outer Banks,

Stoppa getting mentioned in the same sentence with Dale Earnhardt AND Ric Flair???  He has finally made it!!

You are not allowed to have radar/lidar detectors in VA...
On 220, 85, and 66 they patrol with ferocity...

I couldn't disagree with 333386's politics more but his opinion of NC seems spot on.  I'm originally from the Bay Area (Alameda), CA but have been living in Raleigh (Cary, actually) the last 3 years and Raleigh is boring, boring, boring.
Off the top of my head, here are some annoying things about living here?
- No luck finding a gym that closes later than 10pm.  (The shitty Anytime Fitness doesn't count -- My high school gym was better equipped.)
- Holy fuck am I tired of strangers waving hello to me.
- Also, I'm sick of seeing so many white people.  Reminds me of when I was stationed in Germany -- except Germans seem a lot more intelligent.
I could continue this rant for a while but I'll stop here.

Forgot to mention being irked by the fact that there is church on (seemingly) every corner.  It must be some sort of tax scam or something.

Lol at Vince Goodrum and Ric Flair.

Also to OP if you are a basketball fan like me, Charlotte may be the better choice.

Huh?  Here in Raleigh you are THE center of college basketball.  UNC, Duke and NC State within a rocks throw of each other.  Charlotte has the worst team in the history of the NBA.

Having lived in every part of NC, except the coast, I think Raleigh is a much, much better area.  Just as much to do without all the headaches of Charlotte.  Wake county schools kinda suck, they are constantly in an uproar.  If you want to "feel right at home" and "do things the way they did back home" either stay where you are or move to Cary.  It's about the same thing.  ;D

Wow I'm also moving to Raleigh, or Charlotte by winter. I was just down there last week looking at houses. Holy shit! You can buy a perfect house for 100k in either city that would cost 300k in NY. Plus it seems the taxes are a quarter of the price as well. We started looking at houses in my price range and I was like wait, I dont need a 4 or 5 bedroom lol. I'm leaning towards Charlotte because its close to the mountains that I would use a lot of, and I can still get to the beach. However I hear bad things about the airport there and since I fly for a living thats a major factor.

Anyone know if the Raleigh airport is better then Charlotte?
