Doing unrelated exercises on a benchpress
« on: July 03, 2012, 11:44:51 AM »
Noticed this annoying trend interrupting my flow in the gym.

For example today, the only reasonable benchpress in the gym that has extra levels of hooks so you can go to failure, was occupied by a small man in his early twenties who between every set laid on the floor and did multiple sets of sit ups, using the bench as a foot rest. He did about 5-6 sets of real pressing.

Of course it's a free gym but doesn't this create more lines when you do extra exercises on machines designed for another use. Or is this a minor meltdown on my part?

I encountered this several times to bring it up of course, other times it's a chick doing butt or leg exercises using the bench press bench as support, other times it's a dude benching then standing up to do deltoid raises with the bar (with the same weight).

I don't know, what is getbig verdict?

Don't forget the twinks with the sideways baseball caps blastin bi's with a dime on each side of the bar for at least 10 sets IN THE SQUAT RACK !
Honorable mention  for the 23 domincans....all in wife beaters and BIG sideways caps....on the phone doing 62 sets of cable xovers.
Its why I train in my garage now    :)

I see this a lot these days too.  Guys doing pullovers, etc.,on the bench attached to the rowing machine.

You will never stop this behavior.

I just mix up my routine and do something different than originally planned.

Improvise in your routine and you will be a lot less upset and sometimes you end up getting a better workout.

This particular trend I'm noticing I believe is linked with the crossfit-wave that has struck down hard on my particular gym. Other gyms aren't as infected.

It's like office rat 40-somethings are suddenly training for a military course or a triathlon race and must do 2 digit sets of jerky chinups flapping their legs spastically to get up and proceed to do jumping jacks and rolling somersaults in the gym hallway..

Can't they go out in nature and play in the woods or something? I'd love to get my set done in 35-40 min.

I'm noticing this lately and I hate it!  This hogging of equipment is fine when the gym is empty but there is no excuse for it during peaks times like after work or a Saturday morning when the gym is crowded and people are waiting for equipment!  >:(

Yes, peak hours are the worst. The gym is almost empty all the time except for lunch and between 17-18.30.

I almost always ask people if they're almost finished when they're using something I need...if they have a lot of sets to do. If they're using something that can easily be done elsewhere I just straight up tell them cause most people are just clueless, its not that they have it out against you.

But it works both ways...if I happen to be using the bench press for leg raises or something gay like that and someone walks by I ask if them if they need it. I'll go see if I can find another bench or wait for one if I have to. I don't know why some people are so unsociable....I mean we're human beings and its what separates us from most animals in being able to communicate with one another.

Sorry bro, but asking someone how many more sets is douchebag behavior. Just do something else, and keep an eye on the equipment you want to use.

There are so many exercises and techniques for each muscle group. Just do something other than what was planned. Simple.

Might be a cultural thing I guess.

Nothig like the guy with his journal and protein shake beside him, supersetting situps on the benchpress, and dong fly's on an exercise ball beside the bench. Seen it.

Then feverishly runs to log everything in his journal.

You are part of the problem--not part of the solution.  Someone could very well be waiting for that piece of equipment, but they may not be standing right next to it because they do not want crowd you or make you feel rushed.  Maybe they don't like confrontation... or they are intimidated by your size... Just because someone isn't hovering over you doesn't mean someone isn't waiting for the piece of equipment.  The point is, you should use the equipment for its intended purpose then leave it alone.  You can do you leg raises on empty benches elsewhere in the gym.  If the gym is empty then you can be more selfish... otherwise quit it!  >:(

Could be. Maybe I'm just an asshole when I'm in the gym.

If for whatever reason I can't do this, I simply ask in a polite manner. I even tell them don't worry take your time...I don't approach people like a jerk off thinking I'm king of the world..lol

WTF is this all about?  Is it really THAT hard to remember what you're doing in the gym?  Has anyone ever radically remade his body by writing stuff down in a journal?  I can see making notes to yourself when you're off the gym floor and drinking a shake, but these dudes who write down every little rep in their log books are annoying.

I'm sure you don't mean it to be rude, but it is bothersome.

Look at it this way, if you go up to someone and ask them how many more sets they have, is it really going to change the end result?

If the equipment you 'planned' on using is beef used, do something else.
You will find that these little changes in your routine are good.

I know everyone at my gym so most of us feel comfortable with one another. I'm thinking if I went to a whole new gym where I didn't know anyone I wouldn't be doing this...

Hard not to laugh at these guys.

Nothing beats the people who superset, using two different areas of the gym, and leave their towel or water bottle on one while they use the other as a means to 'reserve' it.

When I see someone on a piece of equipment I want I just ask them if they mind if I work in.   I just use a tone that implys it wasn't a question.  They usally leave after one set.

Hahaha I once asked if I could join two guys who were bench pressing. One of these guy told me that he didn't want that. It was some wannabe powerlifter cat with inzer wrist wraps, a true stone face warrior  ::). After his set (225 for 1 shaky, ass lifted rep) I took his weight and benched 12 easy reps, after that I asked "sorry bro, are you done yet?" He looked pissed.  ;D
