Not with the oversized ballparks, and crappier balls and bats they had to play with. Not always flying to every game - you rode a bus a lot. Fewer games in the season. No strength and conditioning. No drugs to heal injuries. People died younger, smoked and drank, got sick a lot more. But then food was better for you then...

Of course, Ruth and the Splinter didn't face middle relievers and closers. And fielders weren't sporting retarded sized gloves like they do today. And there were no black players, so the pool was shallower. But then, there were fewer teams, so the talent that was there was more concentrated, making it more likely to face a strong ballplayer.

Everything evens out, and if you're a fan of sabermetrics, you see that when you normalize for a lot of   the aforementioned playing issues, Ruth and Williams and Foxx and Gehrig still enjoyed amongst the top 10 seasons ever played by any ball player past or present (Bonds is this era's "Ruth"). In today's game, Ruth and Williams would still be greats. The greatest today? Quite likely, but not 100% guaranteed.
Nah Bond's is a fraud.  Don't get me wrong, Bonds was still a great player, but he would have been at best a 30/30 guy.  Add steroids into the mix, and you are talking 50, 60, 70+ HR a  year.  Inflated bullshit numbers.  Look at Brady Anderson for example.  The leadoff hitter for the Orioles just happened to belt out 50+ HR one year.  Tell me that fucker wasn't juiced to the gills.

This was in the golden era of newspapers in New York when home run balls were scrutinized heavily by muliple reporters and the verification of their lengths are legit. Babe Ruth is without a doubt one of the hardest hitters of all time. Maybe the hardest even to this day? You can't fake or down play multiple 500+ feet home runs.

Yes but don't you agree that guys like Ruth and Ted William's stats look that much more impressive these days?  They couldn't have been on anything but booze and hookers.

No, because teams didn't utilize the bullpen the way they do in the modern era.  In those days, if a pitcher didn't "have it" on a particular outing, they still pitched the game.   Williams and Ruth got to face them 4-5 times that day.  Today, the face a variety of specialists who have been training for it since they were 8.

That's one of the main reasons outside a ton of other variables why I don't think we can accurately compare the eras.  One way would be to measure the variance of a player's numbers to the league mean at the time and do that for each era, but, even then what's the point.   I think Ruth and Williams were incredible, but I don't find it any more impressive than what the elite of the sport do today.

Bonds isn't a fraud, he just happened to be better than anyone else during that part of the roid era.   So many others were juiced beyond belief, but nobody even scratched what he was doing.   His 2001, 2002, and 2004 years defy belief, roided or not.

I believe ARod did take steroids and they hurt him bad. I forget the exact year, but I think it was his first year on the Yankees he sucked big time. The next year he lost 30 pounds, and it looked to be all mass, and he took off again. The steroids did nothing but add mass to him which slowed his bat speed big time. The scouting report on him that year was feed him fastballs cuz he cant catch up.

A-rod hangs out with bodybuilder type chicks and shit. The dude is knee deep in the latest and greatest ways to beat drug testing.  Big Papi of the Red Sox is the same.

Arod was juiced to the gills when he was in the Rangers he only stopped because they caught him.  Look at his numbers ever since.

Not really - his 2005 and 2007 were phenomenal, and his 2009 playoffs might have been the best performance by a single player ever.

The main driver behind his decline is his age.

Everyone gets lucky given enough chances.  He usually is all-time bad in the playoffs.

Wrong again, you're just falling for the media myth.  In baseball, you don't get lucky as the sample size increases - you gravitate toward your career norms.

He has a career .884 OPS in the playoffs.

I believe it. It's a shame how far Manny has fallen. One of the best pure hitters to ever play the game.

Naw they don't stop. He was young and didn't have a care in the world when he was putting up big numbers. There was no testing so these guys could do anything they wanted. Now its in his head. He's looking over his shoulder every day.I bet every time he injects himself with something, he's wondering in the Doc that sold him the stuff really put Test in it or something else that stays in the system for a long time like Deca or something. Didn't you see the pictures with The General hanging out with A-rod? All these drug addicts talk about after sex is drugs. If A-rRod was clean, he would stay far away from sluts like The General.

I don't get this - Deca stays in the system longer than most stuff.

good catch. I met to say the Doc put Deca in instead of a quick acting test or something.
