It's hard to see what happened. He looked ok, struggling but not out of control, then he just dropped it

Holy Shit.....
He didn't have his thumbs around the bar so when he tried to heave it backward it slipped out of his hands.
Also, I agree with "The Spotters Fucked Up"

I only bench light without my thumb around the barbell. It's just to dangerous to do it heavy. Lifting, controlling the weight, benching with minimal control. Nope.
About the spotter, a heavy weights drops in an instant. Nobody can hold that weight down when it falls. You should constantly keep your hands around the barbell to have a change, and many don't like that. A spotter should be used for the last rep, and accidents.

It wasn't the spotters, he rolled his wrists forward and lost it, the spotters couldn't (didn't have enough time)!

I have always used a thumbless grip. It helps you not use your forearm strength to hold the bar. If you do it right it is the best way to bench if you are used to it. And I never believed that having your thumb around the bar will help you hold the bar. I don't care how string you are your thumbs are not going to hold any kind of weight if it rolls forward. And that weight dropped so fast the spotters didn't have time to do anything.

onlyme, his grip of the bar ould have been weakeded by the fact that he would not be able to hold oit tigtly with 4 of his fingers. the way i look at it a door stop is tiny but can hold a large door open, similar to the thumb. true about rolling your palm forward but a thumbless grip is just an unecessary risk.

Well I think it has to be what you are used to I never used a thumb. I did try a couple times and it just felt weird. I think it might give some sense of security but I still don't think it matters much if the bar is going to roll. I have big thick hands so the bar feels good and fits perfectly in them. Maybe it is just because it is the only way I have done it and am used to it. But from that video I still don't think using his thumbs would have helped one bit.

I have always used a thumbless grip.
Commonly known as a "false grip"!

I'm use them both,
and without the thumb is just dangerous with heavy weights. Sometimes you touch your chest with the barbell, and it moves a little bit, you will lose control. I know it isn't the right form, but shit happens. And what about the spotter, you can't expect from him doing a deadlift during if somehing happens. Cause if you lose control for whatever reason, i don't think thumbless gives you any kind of change.
