It's a basic compound exercises that you have to master.
At a certain point you can do them without hurting your workout just like pushups for instance and you'll use them as warming-up.

If you got the possibility to do them weighted, include them in your workout.

i agree both are imperative. do full range of motion especially on chins. go slightly below parallel on dips and use a slow controlled negative with no bouncing at the end. when you get better use a dipping belt so you can always improve.

yea if you cant do chins even do partials and each day go a little lower until u are doing full reps. use this as a supplementary exercise for lat pulldowns. try using your grip on the pulldown similar as though you were doing chins.

Dips and Pullups are staples of any bodybuilding, sports training program. If you dont do them, its like not squating for legs.

I don't think they're essential.

They're essential when you start working out. It's the easiest way to gain strength without equipment. At a certain point the don't have much value because you come used to your own weight.

Weighted dips and weighted pull ups are awesome mass builders in my opinion. If your to heavy to do pull ups then yes you have no choice but to do lat pulldowns unless you have a spotter. Your right there not essential. I over stated my point comparing them to squats.

pull ups > lat pull downs

dips > triceps press downs

Many people do lat pull downs many years and are not able to do pull ups

dips certainly arent essential
pullups however are hard or near impossible to replace for back width

dips when augmented with a chest workout help so much. i personally believe they are fundamental and whilst i have hit one or 2 plateaus with bench pressing i have not ever hit one with dips. they literally add immense functional strength and lots of muscle onto the chest shoulders tris and even help the lats and traps. if you aint a believer try them lol. i used to just do lat pulldowms and now ignore them in place of pull ups.

i believe they are as big an important major exercise such as bench, dead, squat, pull up, press. i believe they are essential and most people i kow who have ever done them believe so too. i would never sacrafice them.

also 115lbx12 is brilliant. im very close to a 400lb total bel;ow parallel dip. watch this space.

For a big wide back Wide Chins are great, and when I say wide I mean as wide as you can go.  You see a lot of guys just flinging themselves up the bar when doing these and that is something you want to avoid.  When you arbitraily pull yourself up you are more than likely using more arms then back.  Let you r hands just act as hooks and nothing more, realy contract your lats and let them pull you up.  I like starting most of my back trainning with 50 wide grip chins. Usualy takes me 4-5 sets.  When I first started doing this it took me 8 or 9 sets.  I would do as many as I could until I could only get one rep and then finish off on an assisted machine.

As for dips, I think weighted dips are one of the best exercises for adding mass to tri's. It's one of my favorites, especially super-seted with rope press downs.

Actually, the lats contract more efficiently with a narrow grip.
