Working legs with lower back issues...
« on: July 20, 2012, 11:32:31 PM »
I remember the day it happened. Squatting 465, I turned wrong...and blam! Lower back killing me.

That was years ago. I've squatted since, but never as heavy. Don't want to go through that pain again.

But you can't rule out squats. So I try..and I end up in pain for weeks...

What can I do to blast quads and not rely on the squat rack?
The answer is "yes".

There will never be a replacement for back squats broseph. Correct the biomechanical issue here, don't ignore it or try to substitute with inferior exercises.

I think leg presses from various angles can be helpful if your gym has them (45 degrees, vertical, etc) and front facing squats on the hack squat have been beneficial for me with lower rates of back problems

How old are you? if you were Diagnosed with a actual Disc injury....take it from me been there done all the real heavy squats, Deadlifts, good mornings, T bar rows etc etc etc....if its a actual DISC issue, heres some Honest Advice........leave it alone as in FORGET "training around" it as in NEVER SQUAT again, cause if your in your late teens early 20s....trust me bye the time you hit you early to late 30s you will wish you did, i didnt listen too advice cause back then as a 20yr old when i first Damaged the back squatting heavy with Bad form >:( anyone over 30 was Old and past it so like the arrogant prick i was i didnt listen :( ...you say you dont want to go though that sort of pain again??....Trust me it gets alot more painful as in can not move and on your back in pain for months and months, and the long term Diagnosis... im talking YEARS and years not weeks of on going issues...you only get one Spine bud look after it if you've Damaged it with a Herniated/bulge Disc injury... take it or leave it from someone whos been there.....its your back.

Just train with those strange leg/quad/glute curl machines.
Every fun way of training legs puts at least some pressure on the lower back.
If something feels wrong I stop squatting  for at least 2 weeks.

My back`s a mess,I do leg presses as my main leg exercise........lots of different scenarios you can use.

Lunges are also good as well as step-ups,leg exts.,unilateral leg presses, etc. etc.

yes i think if your back is bad leave squats alone. Leg press is what i would do, Dumbbell squats, lunges(as mentioned by Wes), extensions(superseted with high rep free hand squats), leg curls and i am sure there are more things you can do.

As far as leg presses go,try doing one set of 100 reps..........stay on machine until you`re done no matter what.

Another scenario is to do 50,40,30,20,and 10 reps while adding a plate to each side on each set.

As far as squats go,I do squat at times, but I go light on the Smith machine, and squat in rapid succession without locking out at the top...........hurts like hell and no back problems.

Another good one is to do a pre-exhaust super-set of leg extensions, immediately followed by light front squats on the Smith machine...........killer!!

Then you could pick 3-4 exercises and do them all in a row with no rest until the last exercises is done.....rest a few, then repeat for a few more cycles.

Listen to you doctor. I find when my back gives me problems I can use leg presses, lunges, and front squats. Doing front squats you back is pretty straight. Also deep dumbbell squats holding the dumbbells at your sides sinking deep with your back upright, not in a bend over deadlift position.

Try bulgarian split squats. Looks stupid but hurt like hell! I feel my legs much more and it is much safer.

Eventually you can end your workout with high rep squat with light weights

Zercher Squat is also a good substitute more so than a leg press
