Find a career that earns profit from people's vanity and/or stupidity.
There's no such thing as a recession on either

Finance/accounting
Every business needs accountant even the ones that are going through bankruptcy need accountants.
Financial advisor: in the rough times ppl are looking for ways to maintain/lose less of their investments, in the good times ppl are looking to maximize their investments.
Most ppl dont have a clue on either of these topics especially accounting(taxes, financial statements etc)
more money in finance in general unless you get to the upper levels of accounting but Id say accounting is probably more recession proof.

I work as a wastewater treatment plant operator.
as the recession hit in 2008 I was working my way up the ladder getting raises each year as I did.
worked out well.
everyone needs to drink clean water and have their wastewater properly treated and discharged back to the environment.
so, the environmental feild is a good career to be in these days.

Repo man. The world never runs out of deadbeats for some reason.
The only way to make decent money as a plumber is to own your own business and then it becomes a pain in the ass. I`ve been doing that for 17 years now, I am seriously burned out on dealing with the public at this point.

Established personal trainers or almost any business as long as debt is low to none
are you high? personal training recession proof ? yup, because when money gets tight.. and people have to start cutting corners, they don't dare cancel their personal trainer

Prison Guard...lol. They make shit pay for all the hassle. My cousin is a guard and I saw first hand what he dealt with. I was a "resident" there for a while. I never acknowledged him though...that would have been a disaster for me. Correction officers in NJ whether at the State or County level make good money. Most make over 100K. In the county I live in it was on the first page of the paper how most made over 120K. I know in rural states they make crap.

Plumbers and electricians still do pretty well. Plumbers especially. Folks involved in the funeral service industry usually aren't bothered by swings in the economy.
I agree with this. The guys that work in peoples houses asking for cash never reporting half of it for taxes. It seems anyone that works in people's houses like plumbers, electricians, painters and handy men are famous for under reporting their wages for tax purposes.

You say that like it's a bad thing. If it works for Mitt why can't the little people do it?

What are your views on chlorine vs chloramine, Hulk? I've heard that chloramine creates a lot more nasties in its interactions with contaminants but none of them are yet on the gov's danger list?

Pharmaceutical and Energy based. IT used to be considered that until all the big companies started shipping those jobs to India, however they have been migrating back due to the fact that ppl hate talking to Indians.

You'd be surprised on what people would give up before they give up a trainer. Granted some will drop out but the majority stay. They consider it therapeutic.
