No. I remember the constant state of tension that existed between the US and the USSR at the time, the threat of global annihilation was very real and it sucked. Most of the cars sucked too.
Most people don't realize how close we really came to getting nuked. In the early and mid 80's the Russians were convinced we were going to go Phil Leotardo on their asses and hit first. They were compiling a board of "signs" that we were about to attack..When the board got filled, they would attack. There were numerous factors involved in that discussion...the KAL jet getting shot down, the sophisticated computer war games we were running, new missle technologies...etc... One evening in Sept of 1983 the Russians manning an early warning sytem got a message that we had launced a series of a half dozen or so nukes. The guy heading the facility did not order the recommended counter strike because a limited attack didn't match any scenarios they had developed. So, he rode it out and later discovered that Russian sattelites had mistaken light reflecting off of cloud tops as missle launches. A different mindset on the switch might have destroyed the world...
