I met Kaz and JPS manytimes during the Scottish games circuits in the late 1980's after I came out the RAF and worked as a recreation officer for a town which held highland games and strongman contests each year. Both were good guys. Kaz was always very quiet after the shows whereas JPS would like having fun in the pubs and restaurants.

It should be remembered that Kaz was still just in his 20's when he won his third and final WSM 1982.  When he came back to face JPS in 1988 after his 6 year ban he was a shadow of his former self and had all sorts of injuries. He would not have been beaten 1983-87 if he had been allowed to compete.
That fat fuck Geoff Capes (who is a total kunt by the way) would never have won his titles without Kaz being suspended all these years. Why was Kaz suspended?  Because Dougie Edmunds liked Capes and used him for promotions and needed Kaz out the way. Later on Edmunds took a shine to JPS who lived with Edmunds in Scotland for months each year.  As Dougie Edmunds owned WSM he made the rules.

Rumour is that Kaz slapped Edmunds in front of his wife late 1982 after Edmunds called him an ugly redneck bastard. Edmunds is a big kunt but was not going to fight Kaz hence a fallout followed by the ban.

Very difficult to estimate as the shirts (we'd be talking multi-ply, of course) help to wildly varying amounts for each lifter who trains with them. Certainly with proper training in a well-fit one Kaz would have pressed over nine, yes.

Kennelly has the biggest shirted press but wasn't as strong a raw presser as Mendelson, who still holds the record at 715 (despite that lift having no pause, ha, ha). I believe Kaz pressed 660 (raw) and hit six reps with 600 (?). There's that dude on YouTube who is shown pressing six for six, and this (as Kaz apparently did, as well) represents just about the strongest that has been seen on the lift.

FREAK pressing strength.

I believe Kaz could have bested Mendelson's raw record if he hadn't gotten injured. What he could have achieved with the right multi-ply shirt, and proper training using it, is a major guess, at best.

But definitely nine, yeah.

Thanks for sharing

So, Kaz got the shaft. One does hear a lot of negative things about Capes. In WSM he comes of as a bit of a tool.

JPS was also pretty young when he 1st competed (NZ, I think)?

Kaz always beat Jon-Pall on the dead lift and log press.

By 1990 Jon-Pall looked really burnt out, he would've never beaten Magnus Ver Magnusson either.

The guy Kaz almost killed was a young Magnus during a medley event.  Kaz was acting like a total dick during that event.

Whatever happened to that other dude, Ed Coenen or something?  I remember seeing photos of him on Flex.  He was doing grip training with like 315 on the bar.

Ed Coan was the name.  Failed some drug tests apparently.

Coan is still around, more in a mentoring role now I suppose. Still very strong, but he's had lots of injures, including hip replacements.

not quite

the perfect structure for squatting is short legs with a longs torso and wide hips

his hips are fairly wide, but he doesn't really have the short legs and long torso thing going on

yes, I understand that

but I didnt say he had perfect bio-mechanics for squatting

I said he was "born for squatting" because he made it look easy, and was obviously good at it, and the superhuman legs..
