The movie will need charisma and a bit of scripting.

When you watch Pumping Iron, if you take Arnold out of it, it's pretty sad and depressing. Waller is a sterotypical bully. Katz is the bullied little boy. Franco is just strange and out of place...it simply confirms all the usual stereotypes people have of bodybuilders (they're usually right).

But Arnold had charisma, he was confident, and he made the movie. He made it cool, because he has personality and wasn't bullied by the press or cameras. He put reporters and interviewers on their heels.

But here's this female reporter and she's overshadowing Hide. He's like background noise. No charisma in front of the camera. He didn't ham it up. That makes for boring TV. Hopefully someone in that movie is cocky and charismatic...a bit of anti-hero the way Arnold was in Pumping Iron. You wanted to root against him, but you just couldn't.

I get the impression we don't have people like that in this movie.

I saw an interview with Dennis Wolf and the director and it was the same thing. Dennis just didn't have the personality or charisma to make bodybuilders look anything more than what the general public thinks of them. I agree that this movie will need an Arnold type personality but I don't think any of the bodybuilders featured in this movie will have it.

Bingo.

Heath - too worried about sponsors to say anything controversial. He'll be watching every word to say just the right thing to make Weider, and Blechman, and Manion and whatever else happy. Nothing of substance, but plenty nice and flowery.

Wolf - well, you saw it. Not very exciting and bland.

Hide - we saw it. Not very exciting. He seems like he wants to be, and if it were Japanese, maybe he'd come out of his shell. Not as comfortable with english as a second language to pull of the satire and chops needed to hold screen time

Ben - I don't know anything about him. Maybe it'll be good...

Branch - comes across as a good old boy, and a little crazy in the gym. But still, will play the Heath card and not do or say anything that would rock the boat. Too much to lose, especially with his side business and how his customers and vendors would view him. He'll play nice.

Kai - the wild card. And folks might kind of like that "head in the clouds" kind of thing. But it'll get old fast. Tom Platz tried that shit in his "fly on the wall video" if anyone remembers. Gets boring fast. Folks don't care about metaphysical transformation.

People want shit-talking. They want Chael Sonnen meets Steve Austin meets Terrell Owens meets Arnold. Kai won't deliver it. He'll be introspective, and "it's all about being the best "me"...that's dull. If bodybuilding is to get any interest, they have to make the pageant look like a sport, where men try to beat each other in sporting events. If it comes across as solitary, narcissistic and drab (I don't know how bodybuilding could come across as anything but), then it will fail.

The best movie on bodybuilding to come out in the last 20 years is still Bigger Stronger Faster, in documentary style. That's kind of sad, but I guess that's also par for the course these days.

If they want a charismatic, edge of your seat, what's he gonna do next, quirky and affable character, then Jay is your man!

". . . This film will take an unflinching look into the widely misunderstood world of bodybuilding. Filming was slated to take place in mid-July and the cameras will travel from Brooklyn, NY to Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach, CA, to document the lives of each athlete as they prepare for the “Super Bowl” of bodybuilding. The docudrama will star bodybuilding legends Phil Heath, Kai Greene, Branch Warren and Dennis Wolf and will follow the lives of the athletes as they push their bodies to the limit while preparing for the Mr. Olympia stage at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. . ."

Is that Kris Dim in the first shot?

On the bright side Kris doesn't have to worry about working legs anymore.

Arnold knew how to promote bodybuilding on talk shows -

Wow....Arnold was a  natural in front of cameras. No bodybuilder today has that sort of charisma or personality.

You got that right! Arnold was articulate, funny, witty and knew how to handle all the negativity that was
thrown his way by these TV reporters. There is no bodybuilder around today (pros) who could do as good
a job as he did. Not even close.

don't think it will make any numbers today really. if people want to watch bodybuilders they can just make a quick search on youtube.. i mean there is tons of it...

in 1977 bodybuilding was something new and interesting to general public. people had never seen that world and physiques like that. nowdays it's just a freakshow for general public and first thing that comes to their mind (in all right) is steroids.

plus like some mentioned Arnold made that movie with his personality

Ray - good in front on the camera, outspoken, controversial

Levrone - alcoholic, bottle of jack, has a hard time forming sentences together like "100 pound dumbbells in yo face"

Kamali - cocky, talks shit

Cormier - parties, loves white woman

Titus  - bad boy, tries to threesome with Melvin and his girl, murderer, pyschopath

Priest - fucks fitness sluts and takes shits on them, played our very own gb member "booty"

Bonus can be bobert and Tom prince..

You're right, bodybuilding was all new to the general public back in '77 AND most people didn't even work out back then so having muscles and being ripped with abs was a very foreign thing to most of the general public. It is much different today and most people now just associate bodybuilding with steroids (which no one knew of back in the '70's and it was also never discussed in "Pumping Iron"). If they don't address the steroid issue in this movie, it will lose all credibility.
