"Dips are the upper-body squat" -Mike Mentzer

Mike's also said pullups were the upper-body squat. I guess he means one for chest and one for back.

Na, he just smoked a cig and was depressed from his last Mr O but a smart dude.
^^
SAME thing happened with me, bro- met him in 1994 at Gold's Venice, he wanted to smoke- asked me if I drink!!  Completely BLEW my mind, as I was still thinking pros were so clean!!!
Nice guy though, very cool- talked for quite a while...

we have a chick at my firm who decided to skip work one afternoon and go watch a movie by herself. she went to watch vanilla sky and some dude proceeded to sit next to her and whack off.  she must be very polite or she must have been impressed,  because she did not attempt to leave during his performance (she said she was traumatized, but she could have run is my thought).  this happened in new york - she was working in our manhattan office, but i think she was living in the bronx, so maybe it happened there.

I definitely remember Mike Mentzer saying to Boyer Coe (as he was training Boyer on a set of chins) that pullups were like an upperbody squat. There's probably a few of them, since you can't train the majority of the upperbody in one single movement.

Mike once wrote, that you can train your full body with squats, deads, chins & dips. The only thing I have against this, is that it will become boring after a few sessions.

I can't imagine a huge chest would result from that alone

Personally I would replace dips by decline DB presses. Other than the back, I feel no need to train a muscle from multiple angles. After all, contraction = contraction, no need to over complicate things.

and AJ later agreed with this near the end of his life, as he said all one needs to do is dips, chin, squats, and calf raises :D :D :D

I do a set of pull-overs with a drop set and static-hold negatives on May 1st, followed by a set of squats with set-extending partials on December 1st.  I'm the biggest I've ever been.

You can train hard or long, you can't do both.  It's the only scientific method.

That's prob his advice for black people & Dennis Wolf.
When I did* squats & deads (* too much pain in the lower back & hips  :'( ) I almost never did calves. I need to train them again, since I switched to machine work.

Arthur Jones looked like he weighed under 150 the majority of his life. They always drag out one picture in the past of him but during his Nautilus hey day I have yet to see any pictures that look like he even remotely trained. Some report he always liked to carry a gun and tried to intimidate those that he could.  Bill Pearl was one of the few that stood up to him.

Someone said a big muscle had bigger muscle fibers. Biopsies on bodybuilders have shown no difference in muscle fiber thickness from non lifters according to one study I read 20 plus years ago. Some believe bodybuilders have actually develop more muscle fibers in conjunction with the muscle fluid retension from steroids.

Lifting fast as in Olympic lifting is showing what power is about. Getting powerful is more important in athletics than strength.

You have to qualify what getting stronger is. Is it that one rep max? That 8 rep max? Or is it the ability to increase the weight for say 3 sets of curls done in the same time frame? Anyone from Dorian down to the worse getbigger only has a limited amount of strength they can increase. After 2 to 3 years a  guy starting at 19 should be very close to his max. So if a 23 year old is using 405lbs for 8 reps in the deadlift as his max after 3 years of dedicated training should he bang his head against the wall trying for 410lbs with a cycle program? I would argue that he should develop a goal of increasing his strength endurance which he could improve on for a new goal.

@ oldtimer

AJ claimed that he peaked out at a bodyweight of 205 with 17 and 1/8 inch arms at a height of 5'8" and at that time he could curl a 165 pound barbell for 10 strict reps til faliure, while benching 280 pounds for 10 strict reps til failure

You may be overtraining. I recommend taking a 12 month lay-off, and cut back on negatives to every 2nd year
