Residents of Manhattan's 19-building, 1,191-apartment Jacob Riis projects, have been without power and water since late Monday evening, and there's been no sign of help from local government.

In all, city officials estimate some 49,000 public housing residents have been stranded by the storm, left without the resources to escape or find alternative lodging.

When Getty photographer Mario Tama ventured inside, he found residents huddled in living rooms lit by solitary candles and gas stoves running constantly for heat.

Here are a few images from Tama's visit on Thursday:

The Jacob Riis project is located on farmost edge of the East Village, between Avenue D and the Franklin D Roosevelt Drive and covering seven blocks between 6th and 13 street. Each of the 19 buildings is between six and 14 stories high.

it's not that obama doens't care.   it's not that the NY sate govt and local officials arne't trying.

It's an issue of there being a shitload of damage.  They're working to fix it, but seriously, millions of people without power is going to happen, and it's going to take a week.  We go thru it in FL almost every year - power goes down for a few hours or a few days.  NYers are acting like Obama is personally golfing with the electric company workers lol, with bloomberg pouring sodas.

it's a lot of damage, and it takes a lot of time to fix.

I mean, shouldn't we all be expert electricians and water workers! Damn people needing help from other people who have been trained in these jobs. That damn 90-year old lady should know the intricacies of an electrical system. She has been alive for 90 years, and in all this time, she couldn't learn how to fix electrical problems? What the hell has she been doing with her time? Probably a damn liberal/democrat. Probably said to herself growing up, "I dont need to learn how to fix that wire. I will just call an electrician."

Now look at her? Can't use her strong American Will Power or strong American Mind to fix her damn electricity.

SCUM!!!

No shit.  These people are really stupid when it comes to this.  They are so used to their Iphones and their television never going out, they can`t even stomach a few days of disconnection.  They really do live in fantasy land up north for the most part.

Utility workers pelted with eggs after Bridgeport, Conn. mayor blasts provider
 Fox News ^ | 11-2-2012 | Cristina Corbin

Posted on Friday, November 02, 2012 3:36:04 PM by servo1969

Angry residents pelted utility crews with eggs as they tried to restore power in Bridgeport, Conn., after the mayor claimed the local power company had "shortchanged" the state's largest city as it tries to recover from superstorm Sandy.

United Illuminating workers reported eggs and other objects being thrown at them a day after Mayor Bill Finch said the utility was taking care of wealthy suburbs while his constituents suffered. The unrest caused United Illuminating to pull its workers out until the city agreed to provide police protection.

"Citizens began throwing things at the crews," Michael West, a spokesman for United Illuminating, told FoxNews.com. "It started to get pretty hairy. They did not feel safe."

West said it started with verbal abuse and escalated.

"We communicated with the city and said if you don’t provide police support, we can't have our crews there in harm's way," he said.

It is in no way Obamas fault. Its called a natural disaster. But I find it funny that with Katrina, it was Bush's fault. That it was race related. Spike Lee made a 4 Disc documentary on it. What a short memory people have about the accusations and perpetuation of racism that were thrown at Bush.

none of these disasters were natural, they were all manufactured using the HAARP machine to run beta tests and disengage the american people and violate their constitutional rights, you people need to seriously start doing your research, all this was planned by the government, the earthquakes in japan, haiti were also a result of the use of haarp for the nwo and illuminati, hurricane sandy was a planned false flag attack to manipulate the elections, do your research
