Personal Trainer Certifications

Not sure if there are any personal trainers here, but I was wondering if anyone knows which P/T certifcation is the easiest to get (testing, cost, etc.) ?

yeah but it also 700 bucks, go with ace, all u have to do is study with all the materials they give u and find a testing site (which there are plenty of). ace would be ur better bet, all places that i know accept  ace and its half the cost of issa.

issa is always having some sort of "special" it'll be 500 bucks. the seminar you dont really have to go to. you mail in the test. ACE is the most full of crap certification. it's basically all biology. The stuff about diet is absolutely false and upside down for people who lift weights anyway. The stuff about training is virtually non existant.  ACE probably is the most accepted one because it's kinda hard to get. as we all know the average musclehead has it right a lot more than some ACE certified windbag. just about every pro bodybuilder would fail the ACE test. if you wanna see buy the textbook. it's around 90 dollars it's terrible. read the book "the bodybuilding truth" by nelson montana he totally talks about this stuff.

I just took my aaai-isma p.t test. It wasn't that hard its an 8hr day for the test but all together i would say the real test practical and written is about 2hrs. The other 6 hrs you go over whats on the test before you take it so you really have to be an idiot not to pass. I'm studying right now for my sports nutrition certification also. I really feal you cant have on without the other. If you go with them buy the p.t study guide and the supplement for p.t. Here is there site www.aaai-ismafitness.com. You can do a conference and drop 500-700$ or do it my way buy the guides and look for the test locally, this way it was only 110$ for the test and i think 80$ for the guides.

All kidding aside the  only reason gyms require them is because they think it will protect them against lawsuits.  If it comes down to this the courts will laugh at your piece of paper you got off the internet in two months and $700 bucks.  Their expert witness for the injured will say how it took him 6-7 full time school years to get his degree.

I heard that  pretty soon all of the certificates are going to be nothing. Trainers are going to be required to have a bacholar degree.  Im currently in college majoring in health fitness and this is what all the professors are saying.

If you went to school for 4-8 yrs to be a personal trainer then yes you probably did waste your time. Most of my friends that have a exercise physiology degree are working for universities or are managers of health clubs.

I do not think gaining knowlege is ever a waste of time. 

I know a young man who had to find a personal trainer to fix a serious back problem.  He was referred by a doctor and told the problem could be fixed by a personal trainer if it were "caught" in time.

It was a frustrating search and next to impossible to find a quality trainer who even knew what the condition was.  It was then impossible to find a trainer who had the hands on experience and years as a personal trainer to design a program for that specific condition.  It was a very frustrating search through over ten personal trainers. 

Can you imagine going to a trainer and he tells you, "I'll go on the internet tonight and learn more about that condition, son."  No kidding.  (He was probably coming on getbig).  : )

You would all agree the personal training certificates in California are given out like water. 

It is years of hands on experience that is so very key to be a quality trainer.  Don't take shortcuts and gain all of the knowlege you can.  After all, you can seriously injure a young man's back.

They are two completely different animals. A physical therapist is a college-educated medical professional who prescribes specific exercises for medical problems - I went to one when I was recovering from my broken ankle to learn how to walk again.  A personal trainer is a meathead who took a two-week course and got a "certificate", and who works in gyms and helps fat old guys "get buff".

ACSM, NASM, and NSCA are good.  NSCA also offers the CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) certification, though you either have to have a degree or be a senior enrolled at a university/college to sit for the CSCS exam.

True, but when you make more than a phyisical therapist it really sheds a different light on things!

ISSA is really easy, you do it on your own time.  ACE is generally respected, but not as much as NASM or ACSM.  All of those three are pretty challenging.

I'm ACE certified. The manual has a lot of info about biology and the nutrition info is all about the food pyramid, but there are reasons for it. You must remember that if you become a personal trainer most of the people you will train will be "ordinary people" not interested in body bulding. Also, unless you get a special certification in nutrition or are an RD then you are opening yourself up to liability issues if the person you are making nutrition recommendations tp gets sick or suffers from kidney problems, etc. ACE is very respected as is ACSM.
