Teaching kids like this one is nearly impossible.  I've seen many young bright eyed, bushy tailed suburban liberals become some of the most cynical people after spending a few months at an urban school.

The teacher should have put his ego in check.  Being a teacher isn't for every one and that kid beat him mentally.  You might feel like a pussy but walk away.  Have the kid removed and be satisfied by the fact that this kid will most likely be a miserable failure his whole life, and focus your energies on the kids you can help.

Some "experts" say these kids have low self-esteem and the best strategy is to improve their self-worth, but from my experience that's often total bullshit and the problem is often the opposite. The little knuckleheads have an over-inflated sense of self worth and entitlement and that is usually the fault of the parents.  By the time they reach high school, many of these kids have had twelve or more years of bad parenting and zero structure.  To be fair, I've seen nearly identical behavior, minus the propensity for violence, at a rich private school.

No shit - I grew up around of those same types in lower Westchester County, N.Y. from scarsdale, Bronxville, Rye, Greenwich, etc. 

Given everything, worked for nothing at all, but they were not violent.  These thugs are violent and lash out on the drop of a dime.

you NEVER let it get anywhere near that point.  You have that kid in the office with a referral when the dirty looks/arguments start.  And you always have a heavy enough object nearby for a KO, should something crazy happen and a kid blindside ya.

All kids need, craze structure...boundaries. And to be challenged...the bad ones don't learn until they do some time, or it starts to hurt them. As Steve Harvey had said, men tend to respond to the best to pain---physical or emotional. I see these kids all the time....
