Ozzy has had a lot of staying power, played a lot of different kinds of music, and had some super talented guitarists... I still don't know if I could even begin to pick ANY top metal bands, let alone a BEST one.

I order the big four:

Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth. Never a big Megadeth fan, Metallica comes in behind Slayer because I feel rthe last few albums were meh.

Seen Slayer quite a few times and it's always hilarious to see them blow everybody else on the bill off the stage - and I don't go out of my way to listen to Slayer, either - but they are on another level in terms of quality of live show.

Seeing Sabbath in April or thereabouts next year. I'm a tiny bit skeptical given that whilst Ozzy seems to be able to sing in tune, he's sort of given up actually enunciating words so much.

I have seen Maiden but I don't get it. Not a diss on them or anything, I just haven't really ever heard enough of their music to like it. Enough people were digging it that my opinion of them shouldn't be considered.

Gunners would have been good in their prime, I've only seen Slash sans Axl and it was pretty decent.

Metallica played at a festival I was once at and it was probably the worst show I've ever been to in terms of deadshits

- I didn't both watching them - went to the doof doof for something I cannot even remember.

Probably the biggest hard rock disappointment I've ever had was Robbeth Zombie - dude played a 45 minute set that included about an 8 minute guitar "solo" (noise) whilst he was off stage doing a costume change (in 45 minutes, remember) and even when he was on stage, he basically just danced around so much that he would only sing about half the lyrics to the song. Awful.

Most hard rock and metal bands have singers who cannot reproduce what they do on albums, live. It's probably the worst genre for that. The human voice just isn't built for screaming and singing. A lot of bands I have liked over the years have that problem. Strangest case of that not being so is Static X, that guy can do what he does on an album, live - it's pretty comical.

Great bands mentioned. I would add Judas Priest and Motorhead there among the greats, as well as Venom for their significance/influence.

If you consider Led Zeppelin metal, than Led Zeppelin. Best rock band ever imo.

If you don't consider them metal, I'd go with Iron Maiden.

Best hard rock/metal band of all time; based on what popularity, record sales, ticket sales? There are too many factors such as age, musical influence, and personal opinion to even debate this topic. Over the years, hard rock/metal bands have stood the test of time, sold millions of albums, and have created a solid fan base.

In no particular order:

Metal: Iron Maiden, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Motorhead, Judas Priest (No Homo)

Hard Rock: AC/DC, Motley Crue, Van Halen, KISS, Guns N Roses, Def Leppard

why ? , Tool is great. so is Soundgarden, "Superunknown" is a hard rock masterpiece.

Just because they didn't play in the 70's and 80's doesn't mean they aren't every bit as good as those bands.

Yup. I saw them play 3 hours for a group of about 200 hundred once in Boston. Stood right in the front, and they just ripped for hours and didn't give anytihng less since they were in a bar.

Metallica, as cliche as it is, ruled from Kill 'em All to about half of the Black album. They were epic, so I'll give them the nod. It's a shame Lars became such a douchebag and Bob Rock took away all their edge.

And, just to state it, I think ACDC fucking sucks outside of two songs.

The title of the thread is Metal/Hard Rock so you have to put Led Zepplin at the top. Without them you would not have the rest! I would put Black Sabbath next and fight it out for the for the the remaining spots.
