CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago has logged its 500th homicide of 2012.

The last time the city reached the 500-homicide mark was in 2008, when the year ended with 512 killings. Last year, city records show Chicago had 435 homicides.

On Thursday, officials with the Chicago Police Department said the city was one homicide away from the 500 mark. Hours later, a 40-year-old man was fatally shot in the Austin neighborhood on the city's West Side. Police say Nathaniel Jackson was found on the sidewalk outside a convenience store with a gunshot wound to the head late Thursday.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office says Jackson was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital early Friday.

Jackson's death remains under investigation. No arrests have been made.

Well, Guiliani did clean it up a lot. Times Square and other areas of NYC were riddled with prostitution, etc. Even Harlem, NY is a lot better than it was. But make no mistake, still a good deal about crime.

Plus, crime may be down, however, in a city of 11 million people, the crime rate is probably still high, just given the amount of people in NYC.

Prostitution probably is still high, but in other forms---escort services, back pages, etc.
The ones walking the track probably are the crackheads, desperate chicks and ghetto snipe.

No, even that is down. 20+ years ago you'd have hookers walking the streets like its nothing. You do not see that as much. As you said, they may have smartened up and now do things like this through escort services.

But Guiliani got rid of the peep shows and a lot of the sex shops that used to be in nyc. That did cause a decrease in the number of sex-related crimes. However, as you said, they may have migrated to other ways.

No one likes to look at the underlying causes of why some things happen, because bursting out in an emotional response is so much easier and attention-grabbing.  Many of these causes and possible solutions would make many uncomfortable and likely cross their particular political and cultural sensitivities.  

Mass shooting or homicide rate going up at a certain number?  Let's BAN all guns!  Of course, we cannot utter such crazy things such as if psychiatric drugs were involved, poverty rates, access to abortion and social service facilities, etc.....  And God forbid someone say something along the lines of "no matter what, an occasional mass killing WILL happen, no matter what."

down here in MD, there are a lot of young girls coming from NYC who are either being pimped out, or using backpages...due to BWI being a centrally located airport on the east coast and also the casinos, they have set up shop...and also go from city to city.
