Should I try to compete again ( summer 2013) or say F it ?
« on: January 05, 2013, 07:22:21 PM »
What do a think? This was me at my best in 1988. I have not competed since 1994.
I'm 54 and chunky ( perma bulker) , should I try again or just accept my fate as a middle aged "has been" that never was??????.

You are 54... How about just try to be healthy and look decent.

No point in killing yourself.

Go for it , Howard, but as Tu says ... Don't kill yourself in the process by stepping in front of a bus on your way to the health food store.

Howard, Pre-contest events such as your Krispy Kream shinanigan have occured on numerous occasions directly outside of the old Golds in Santa Monica, so your post is definitely not far from actuality.

For further facts on that subject matter, I have to refer you to Peter G

I would also recommend that you consider the indirect advices of some of our most well known GetBig intelligencia and avoid Solar Flairs and Asteroid attacks and end of the world occurances.

They also used to drink tons of coffee before workouts, or so I recall.  Robinson told me that it became so difficult to get enough caffeine that they just starrted taking No-Doze instead.

The SCOTT, If I'm not mistaken .... it was Zane who initiated that massive cups of coffee routine.

Could be wrong though.

Could have been.  Robbie told me about it in the 70s.

BINGO x 2 on the SCOTT recommendation.

My first dog was BINGO but he died before the second number was called.

I still miss him.

He would have been 102 today almost!

if you still have the drive, desire and want... then of course do it. im sure people told you way back then negative things about how you couldn't do it, and you proved them wrong. don't waste time lookig for to many of todays people to tell you you can, prove them wrong too. show your self and them you still got what it takes.

;D I've never understood the love for Krispy creme in general, I like donuts and all but man give me some ice cream or chocolate chip cookies any day over donuts.   My brother on the other hand,  he looooves donuts.

Anyways,  Howard regarding your dilemma,  you have to ask yourself.....  Is your heart really going to be into it?   Like 100%? because if you half ass it and then end up doing bad at the show you will be kicking yourself and really be miserable.   I mean...  You know how bodybuilding is like,  you have to put your mind, heart, and soul into it to do well.   Are you ready to do that?

Maybe a good idea is to focus on being healthy,  drop some weight and then maybe later you can focus on deciding on whether you want to compete again.

I was thinking he looked a great deal like Steve Michalik.

Howard certainly looked good, the physiques back then were better than today, I don't care what anybody says, had bodybuilding stayed with the ideal of symmetry, proportion and condition and not gone the way of the mass monster, bodybuilding may have had a chance of greater appeal, not to mention careers could have been extended and we wouldn't have seen the dead pool we currently have.  Following bodybuilding in the 90's, I thought I was onto something, I had no idea that it was going to be turned into a freak show that everyone laughed at.  So sad, bodybuilding could have been so much more.

SCOTT! I stand corrected. You are most definitely correct.

Howard does look very much like the young Steve Michalik. ... the year he beat Grymkowski  at the Championships.

Is that really you, Howard??

Part of the reason I want to come back is to put an old school classic physique back on stage.
I also enjoy showing what is possible on little or no drugs.
I was off everything for about a yr when this pic was taken.
I'll take it as a HUGE compliment if some refuse to accept I wasn't on anything .
I always would laugh to myself when people told me what I had to be on to compete and look good.
I'm on Androgel now so I guess I'm not natural but at least I'm honest.
