i havent trained legs for over a month easily

so today i tried leg press (i usually did squat)

used the oblique upward leg press machine with 200kg of plates on it for 3 sets, 15,12, and ten reps controlled no locking out

now i dont have the slightest soreness

very sure that if i had done squats my legs would be sore all over now

conclusion

i doubt the effectiveness of leg press

Dorian didn't do a lot of heavy squatting for most of his pro career.
His legs were fine.

I feel more on the outside of the quads on leg press. Squats are still king, tho.

the problems with squats is they put so much loading on the spine

what about a weighted hip belt for squats

Let a big fat heavy guy jump on your back then you squat with him, you will have big legs in no time.

this looks like a good idea

benefit of squats for legs

without risk for the spine

?

would be very awkward to use enough weight.

There's always step-ups, Lunges, 1-legged squats, hack squats, sissy squats, deadlifts (with bar behind the back), etc. as alternatives to squatting.

Leg press doesnt have equal stimuation to Squats but you can still get a good leg workout using LP. When I do them, I start with 25-30 reps straight and then second set for 15 3rd for 10-15...by then my legs are sore

You can't argue with these results.

You can't stimulate your legs with leg presses as you can with squats.

But regarding leg presses, vertical leg presses (lying down) are better than horizontal (seated), IMO.

Legpress build quads, squats build hips, waist and butt.

Probably the best to build quads for me, the lying down one.

Even though I been doing squats the past few years.

Downside of leg press is that its harder on the knees, and squats don't bother my knees at all and I've had a small amount of cartilage removed from my knee via arthroscopy.

both are great exercises.. but i like Barbell squats flat footed and get better results than leg press. I do not believe the notion (largely popularized by Vince Gironda, although his charges did smith machine squats and hack squats) that full Barbell squats give you overdeveloped Buttocks, hips, waist and "carrot" shaped thighs !!

Kevin did plenty of squats early in his career before he injured his back. He was a strong squatter.

You can build great legs without squats. Squats are not for everyone and leg presses can definately build legs. For most people it doesn't have to be an either/or situation tho.

This is your best thread to date chalo, well done.

I recently started squatting on a smith machine as I moved and it's all the free gym in my office has.  It seems like a fine exercise but feels very different than a regular squat, I feel like it is harder on my quads and easier on my posterior muscles (lower back and "The Glutes").

thats what i always though.

kevin levrone also never did squats.

as for soreness,i dont know if thats even any indication for muscle growth.

my previous legs workout i did nothing but leg curls and the legs are sore like hell, unlike when i do squats and legpress.
I actually feel my legs better doing a pre-exhaust superset leg extension+squats. I am sore after this and you do feel the muscles better when squatting(reduced poundage but i like it)

they all work and should all be used just rotate squat one wk do hack instead, leg press ,extensions, lunges ,should be main staple,,higher rep type training build legs ,,heavy squats are good for the ego but they do build a leg base and thickness all around.

I found that doing leg presses first, followed by squats on the Smith machine produced the best results!

that's what i do as well, squats are generally my last or 2nd to last movement on leg day, though i do bb pause squats instead of sm squats.

I had to replay that when Simmons said she benched 505.  Then I googled the video.   Unblievable.
