Whether it's obvious or not, if you start out with certain advantages (money, connections, race), it's way easier to fail upwards. I think this is one of the reasons a lot of non-minorities are so vehemently opposed to even considering the idea of privilege- whether it be male, white or whatever. People feel better about their success when they believe they're participating in a meritocracy, and that's rarely the case.
Hahaha... in 1996 I was sitting in the restaurant of the Yorkville 4 Seasons hotel having dinner with 2 Jewish princesses. I use the term as a very accurate pejorative, both figuratively and literally.
I'm so tempted to state their names because many will recognize them, but they shall remain nameless.
One girl (one of the biggest cock teases you will ever meet) out of the blue blurted out how she hated girls who sleep their way into roles because it puts her in a position of having to do the same thing. She thought given my past experiences and subsequent reactions to sexual harassment that she'd find a sympathetic ear. Boy was she wrong! Ha! I couldn't hold my tongue. I gave her such a mouthful.
I just glared at her, and said "Who the hell are you to judge? Have you ever walked a mile in her shoes? at least she's competing on an even playing field. Or do you think a system based nepotism is better?" etc., etc., etc., That self entitled little biyatch actually said she deserved any jobs she got because of who her father was. She actually believed that. I went off on her something fierce. I told her rather than blame the victims, place the blame where it squarely belonged... on the predatory bastards who prey on other people's vulnerabilities and desperation. if you've never been hungry, or had mouths to feed, don't you dare judge someone for doing what they felt they had to do in order to feed themselves or their children, or put a roof over their head. You ever been hungry? no, I don't think so. infact I don't think you've ever wanted for a damned thing in your life. I bet I even know what you got for your 16th birthday... you got a car didn't you... Infact, I wouldn't be surprised if Daddy pays the rent on your apartment? I read her like a fucking book! She was mortified at how transparent she was... and I gotta tell you it felt damned good to let her have it. she really needed it. Granted that wasn't the ONLY reason I unleashed on her. Unbeknownst to her I was very aware of how she mind fvcked my top client. He was another privileged Jewish prince, ...but at least he knew it, and didn't delude himself into thinking he got everything he did by merit. lol. He knew who is Dad and his Uncle were, as well as the fact that he was Jewish helped him considerably. She needed a good reaming and it felt good to give it to her.
But she literally couldn't fathom how she didn't deserve all the breaks she'd gotten simply because of who her father was, and couldn't possibly perceive of any unearned privileges she enjoyed. Talk about your entitled and frikkin' clueless princess!
