No doubt training with that intensity makes a huge difference. They also get plenty of rest, don’t drain themselves mentally at work all day and never take days off. Man, I never want to go to prison. I took a class on corrections in college and we took a field trip to a prison in Baltimore, MD USA. We saw what they eat. Lunch: 4 oz noodle salad, small peanut butter container, small jelly container, 4 slices of white bread, 6 oz milk, apple sauce. I’m sure dinner isn’t much better.

Its a great read. Really important to remind yourself that without training hard, no diet, no supplements can make your goals a reality.
Really makes one remember to put his 100% in training and not to worry about other stuff too much.

I was in West Africa a couple of months earlier this year and thought about this issue since I had heard so much about the importance of protein. Lots of peasents, mine workers, wagon carriers etc. looked very strong there and they walked around with huge wagons all day or worked their fields with biceps, cutlasses, seeds and rain as the only agricultural inputs. (Even though they didn’t squat or press I’m sure their daily tasks would carry over well to those exercises.)
People were eating on average 1,8 meals a day and not often with meat or large quantities of fish in them. Some had rice dominant meals with leafs, groundnuts and sometimes smoked fish for only 10 months out of the year and ate mostly cassava in all its forms during the 2 “lean” or “hunger” months between harvests in August and September.

The only thing that confuses me is that I’ve read so much about how important it is to eat enough protein. If these guys aren’t getting 1 gram of protein per pound and still getting big and strong then the whole “eat your body weight in grams of protein” thing must be another myth? I’ve always wondered about how prisoners can get so strong without being able to eat quality food and/or enough protein…
Thanks for the post.
