How did the hair loss effect your self-esteem at that young age?
It probably bothered me somewhat. It couldn't have been that bad though, since I don't remember feeling any loss of self-esteem at that time. Of course, when I was young I was probably a little more sensitive about some things, like being bald, then when I matured some.
I actually wrote my thesis on the remedies for male pattern baldness. I interviewed Hair Club for men, doctors offering various surgical solutions, wig and toupee makers. I also researched whatever creams and meds for hair loss were on the market at that time. I wrote my thesis from a humorous aspect because the more I investigated this subject the more ridiculous and expensive the remedies I found out about were.
I remember interviewing a fellow I met at the gym who was undergoing scalp reduction. What that is, is where a doctor cuts away a portion of the bald scalp, pulls up the remaining scalp and sews it back together. This is repeated once the skin has healed, until the scalp is fully foliated. Of course someone as bald as me would end up with a permanent smile and laughing eyes.
The thesis was submitted to a publisher of educational books, mainly because of my humorous take on the subject and because humor is often missing in theses.
