How were the Turks able to invade half the island in the 1970's?  ???

Why didn't the Greek army kick them off?

The Turks have more-or-less ruled Greece since the fall of Rome.  Greece was an integral part of the (Orthodox Christian) Byzantine empire, with its capitol in Constantinople.  Mainland Greece & most of the islands were repopulated with Slavic and Turkic peoples from other parts of the empire -- for reasons economic and otherwise.  When the Eastern Empire fell and the Ottoman Muslims took over, the Turkish grip on Greece loosened somewhat.  But the Ottomans were still the de-facto rulers of Greece, and they considered it a second-rate province.  Its Christian denizens were treated accordingly.

...In the 19th century, with European help, the Greeks waged a war of independence & installed a German/Bavarian king.  The monarchy has since been deposed.

Long story short:  The Greeks have a long, long history as subjects of foreign rulers.  Greek 'independence' is a relatively new concept -- for the vast majority of the past 2000 years, they've been a Turkish territory.  Ironically, they were also ruled by German nobility.

You're in Europe bro

Definitely my man - but not in Euro-hole. The best A-class. Far better than USA or anyone in Europe excluding Big GERmoney.

we don't need or ask left-outs from anybody. And shouldn't give it anymore to places who make absolutely nothing but scratch each others asses all day long.

In fact, the Scandinavia (inc. FIN) should be put as " Europe+ " because the difference between FIN, SwE, NOR and the middle Europe yet alone South Europe is huge.

I'm not really familiar with their modern history, but you're right, the concept of a united 'Greek' nation is a new one.

Though, I know of the ancient and medieval history of the East Romans/Byzantines, they called themselves 'Romans' and even viewed at as an insult if their Emperor was called 'Emperor of the Greeks' instead of 'Emperor of the Romans' and claimed to represent the Roman Empire right till the fall of Constantinople in 1453.

Meanwhile, Greece and Cyprus's hated enemy continues to bolster its financial and economic position: Turkey owed the IMF $23.5 billion in 2002 and just made its final payment, reducing the sum to zero.
