Not only is music not a contest, so nobody beats the other guy...but Lombardo isn't your most well rounded player. Drumming is about phrasing, dynamics, dynamic contrast, and so on. A speed metal track is fast, but that's about it.
You could have put up a ton of good players, instead that clip.
Have you heard of Colaiuta, Gadd, Chambers, Mayer, Carlock, Weckl...and the list goes on. Those are top quality musicians. Peart has great drum parts and is great in Rush, but doesn't come close to the guys I mentioned.

Music is meant to be listened to and enjoyed - too many "artistes" tend to forget that and go off on wanky solo's for 10 minutes showing their skillz but producing something that has little value musically.

Are you a percussionist, or drummer?

Rich is often regarded as the greatest by men who are referred to as the "greatest" in this thread. He may not be viewed by the average music lover as contemporary anymore...the heydays of big band and jazz are long since passed and though they do enjoy a following, I don't need to tell you that it's not what it used to be.

Spend time with Peart and ask him who he thinks is the greatest. He'll tell you it's Buddy Rich.

The whole point of a solo is to show a virtuoso's prowess on the instrument. And there's showmanship involved too. That's part of being entertaining, which frankly, most drummers aren't (to non-drummers...most drummers find other drummers entertaining, but that's incestuous).

Rich is a peerless musician. What made him extra special was his showmanship and ability to lead other great musicians...something you don't see often from the rhythm section.

NEIL PEART some incredible drum parts/runs/solos through the decades,his 70/80's stuff was awesome,the later 80's with the new wave electric drumming pads got a little cheesy but he made it work around his solo's normal kit toms.floor tom's,bass ,his work in just a song like 'red barchetta'shows his sound/power he creates just great stuff.

Great clip lightweight. Listen to them all the time, maybe even better without the singing...
He is definitely a very good metal drummer, good enough to be at drum fest.
Agree w/ most here, Dennis Chambers, Dave Weckl, Buddy Rich (of course), Gadd, Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews) all up there.
