Robert Kennedy was always respectful to me, and to many others.   But yes, falling ad sales, high cost of rent on a new office building, and not watching the expenses, along with a declining circulation, led to the downfall on the entire company.

Oxygen,   MuscleMag - can be very viable if done right without high unnecessary expenses.

It wasn't too long ago that MD had Pictorals of women with huge implants and electrical tape covering strategic places...and they sold like hotcakes, and then they stopped.

Retailers gave them shit for it or so I heard.  Said they wouldn't carry the mag in certain places like grocery stores.

yet men wearing less than what normal men wear for underwear is ok?

Well, it was good while it lasted.
7/11 and most gas stations don't have magazine racks anymore.

When Oxygen became Toscagen I stopped reading.

This is still very sad though. Oxygen was the best female fitness magazine out there.  :-[

It used to be the best female fitness magazine.  I stopped purchasing it a long time ago though.  It just became very boring and like a receipe book.

Since when does filing for bankruptcy protection mean "out of business"?    They could seek new lending agreements or sell the assets to another company, who could then resume publishing under the new ownership.

Apparently they live by the same "it's only gay if you want it to be" rule we do at getbig.  When I was in high school and started lifting weights my parents would buy the mags for me.  My stepdad would tell me he checked the magazine out first to make sure there wasn't anything to homo in it.

From Bill Geiger, editor-in-chief of the magazines...

"Bad news folks: Canusa/Robert Kennedy Pubs which produces MuscleMag and Oxygen has gone out of business. Closed its doors. It was great working all the great people on staff and athletes out there. Hope I land on my feet."

The is how an  editor-in-chief communicates this to employees??? Leadership is the problem here. Nothing more, nothing less.

Sad news. I remember the glory days of Trish Stratus photo spreads in MuscleMag International, as well as some very good writing. It was Bob who brought Trish to the masses before she made the move to wrestling at WWE.

Also sad to about Bob's wife and son's death at just 23 before Bob himself passed away:

I have a journalism degree (pre-Internet days) and it's been kind of sad to witness the death of print. The Internet is great, but there is something great about reading from the printed page that computers can never totally replace.

It's not a surprise that MMI folded, though. The issues I picked up over recent years were total ads and the writing could not compare to the past.

No, that was posted on facebook hours after it all occurred.

There was a company meeting in the morning, in which they all all informed at the same time when financing / a buyer / other options failed and did not go through like perhaps they thought it would.

Bodybuilding is dead. The interest in seeing drug bloated cosmetic muscle guys posing in g string speedos is just about on life support. The sport was always driven by the magazines. Now no one buys them. Bodybuilding shows were every where in the 80's. The sales of bodybuilding magazines had really big circulations then. They are no where to be found now. Insecure teenagers and young men that were drawn to the sport are now into joining strip mall MMA gyms.

Gym memberships are big now. It's just that fitness is the goal and not the syringe.

The internet killed printed media.

In ten years, I'll be surprised if any magazine, on any subject, or any newspaper, is still being published.

I wonder which muscle mag will be the next to go?  Ironman?  Flex?

And I disagree with some of the following comments that it's the look of today's bodybuilders that's hurting magazine sales.  I think it's just there's no place in our modern electronic world for paper publications.

I never see anyone buying the magazines, but in fairness, I don't buy them or subscribe either.  Why do need them when I have getbig.com?
