FYI - I asked my GF's father for permission first to keep it old school. They approved.

My wife's father is an old school bad guy. He was abusive to my wife's mother, abusive to his daughters, abusive to his other wives. So at the time I proposed to my wife he wasn't around to ask for permission. Regardless, had he been around at that time in the role of "bad guy" that he perfected then I doubt I would've asked. A true father or mother deserves to be asked, but a man like that.....no, they don't. Today, he's older and regretful and he's workin slowly to build the relationships he destroyed.

I did the same thing. Totally asked both the parents.

They truly appreciated it.

Yes, I asked. It was more of a formality, because the ring was already bought, but he gave his blessing. That's what a man does.

I didn't ask for permission per se.... but I did speak to her father beforehand man to man, making my intentions clear, they had known me for a long time, and we had a great relationship so nothing was really a surprise!

He sat there and stared at the table without looking at us or talking to us for 15 minutes straight.

my wife was raised by her mother, dad not been about since she was a little girl but when we decided to get engaged but i asked her mothers permission. i was 40yrs old at the time so i have old school values, thankfully. my wife is 13yrs younger than me
