Personal training is no different than slavery or any starter position..for the business owner, you are just another form of income coming into the balance sheet. You are a 1099, working under your "own" schedule so long as you pay his fee..hahaha...helping people lift weight is serious business!!!,

The personal training business is what you make it.  I train people because there's always someone wanting to get in shape...whether its for a wedding, class reunion, or for their own health...whatever because it really doesn't matter.  Its a business that requires very little overhead and for the most part its a cash business.  Not only that, I make even more by simply giving them an Advocare brochure and that generates residual income for supplement purchases.

Personal Training is the perfect business because its part of the Health Care Industry which is rapidly booming due to the excessive amount of obesity in this country.....it matters not to me whether some people disagree with the business because its just more money for me

just like in many businesses, you have to be an asshole to be successful. The only way to make money is to train people in a rich area. Poor people dont have the luxury, time, will, to learn how to get fit and healthy, most abandon before reaching any king of results. They re just here to allow the local shit scam gym to make money off them. Most people in the "business" are preying on weaker minded people insecurities.

Listen when this man speaks: according to Vincent, Anabolic Mayhem generates a trailblazing $300 a month in advertising revenue. You heard that right: Vincent is locking in an extraordinary 1400% return on the typical $20 (or thereabouts) required to maintain a small website. In fact, at this rate, Vincent will be a self-made millionaire in a mere 278 years -- amazing! Needless to say, Grow Rich Slowly occupies a prime position on the mahogany shelf in the trailer.

while this is true for me... I did ok elsewhere training housewives/soccer moms who could only afford a couple hundred a month as well.

It's all about who you know. One of my clients happened to be a former Olympian (from south pacific country.. not U.S.), who now owns almost a dozen businesses and runs a concierge business that caters to uber-wealthy. after a month he'd given me a couple of his rolodex/datebases containing nearly 600 people from the most expensive country clubs in the area... people with net worth in the tens and hundreds of millions. Bill & Melinda gates are on one of the lists... the ex CEO of ticketmaster, ect... Before you know it, i'm training a rapper/producer who's CD I shoplifted when I was 13 because I wasn't old enough to purchase it.......

as my concierge client tells me, "*my name*, you've got to stand close to the money tree... because the money falls straight down. you might get lucky and the wind will blow you a dollar or two, once in a while... but generally speaking, the money falls straight down".

... oh, and drive a nice car & wear a nice watch. lol. Can't be parking your Honda accord in front of a clients $15million home. (or be wearing a 60mm Invictia P.O.S.)

really? because my last two gf's were investment bankers. they must've been 'slumming' I guess...

and as long as you can prove income (ugh, taxes?) you can get a bank loan.... and building wealth? why don't you save and invest your money? I turned my personal training $ and had my wealthy clients invest in my fund when I was a prop-trader. Who needs a 'bank loan' when you have clients worth 20 mil and are looking for any other way to our perform the s&p.

sounds like you're not doing something right.

you sound bitter... like life has let you down.

Amen to that! Damn, I guess I've just been damn lucky, huh? My very first year was near 6 figures. It's not difficult to do the math. Median income was $110 - 135 in the city. I charged $50 an hour and trained 10 clients a day and 4 or so on Saturdays and maybe 1 or 2 on Sundays. That's a minimum of $2500 per week and $10 K per month x 12 = 120K ~

Now I said "near" 6 figures because some clients just did 1/2 hour sessions and some clients that did 3 month (or longer) contracts got a  reduction in fees. The gym was small and I was the only trainer. I had 25 class teachers (spin, step, yoga, etc.) and I got a percentage of their money as the Fitness Manager.

I also branched out and trained the US Swim Team and an Acro-Gymanstics team for the Beijing Olympics. I charged by the student and trained at their gym. I was also paid to design the weight training gym that was built inside their gymanstics gym.

Granted, I was working from 4:30 AM to closing with a few naps in my custom "cool down" room, but please, don't tell me it can't be done.

Have you ever heard the saying "You're doing it wrong?"

How about "what the mind can conceive....?"

You guys that are ranting are getting stuck in the ugly corporate gym scene. You are not in the real world where the money is (for you) nor are you thinking correctly (calculating)

Trust me, in this shitty economy there is MONEY TO BE MADE IN PERSONAL TRAINING!!!!

Ask 100 people randomly if they would like to be in shape. They are all going to say "yes" ~ what does that tell you? You put the price on it and they will find a way to come up with the dough.

that's the worst part of being Fitness Director and being involved in damn near every facet of the business... I got to the point now that I don't have to come in till about 1pm, but i'm there till midnight, and go run shopping after (thanks 24hr walmart), get home eat, shower, wind down, return emails, tend to my 'other' biz, emails & such.. then if I have a client who absolutely has to train in the AM, i'll take a 30min nap on the couch, and head back to the gym at 5am for a 30min session.. head home and sleep till 1130..... if i'm lucky i'll get a 2 hour break where I'll sleep in the daycare room for an hour, wake up drink a preworkout and get a 45min workout in........ it gets brutal sometimes, but the $ is worth it.

That's the way we roll. I came from the Trucking Industry originally.

Some of these kids need to understand work ethic. It applies to any job (or any degree of success) ~ once you get established, you can take a rest day here and there, but it gets in your blood, and you probably will schedule a rest day, but you won't take it.

Something for nothing?

No way! Not in this lifetime.

And I'm not bitching. I enjoy my lifestyle... (and the $$$$)

If you say it can't be done, no matter what endeavor, you have ALREADY failed ~ sorry.

Oh yeah, and a special thanks to the 24 hour Wally World. Not much open when I get done. Not even my GF, who thinks I am fooling around with all of the "gym bunnies" as she calls them. Not.

You bring that shit into your world and cross that line, you may as well dump your business ventures.

Sacrifice and success seem to go hand in hand quite well.

Are you and ESFitness independent contractors, have your own facilities or work for a facility?

I carefully chose the facility I work in. It is a small gym that caters to personal training, EFT's and a non-corporate attitude. In other words "no hidden fees"

The first part of my investigation was Googling "Median Income" for this area.

Within a ten mile radius we have an average median income of 46K per household, 57K, 76K and 110K ~

My second part of the investigation was "Who is our competition?"

The third consideration, of course was: "Will I be able to build a business here the way that I want to?"

Which one do you think I chose?

Give it a couple years and you'll have my attitude...I'd rather have personal trainers go out and suffer for finding the clients...doing all your "research"..and then pay me ..owning a gym is a serious business.. a bunch of motivated hard working wanna bes thinking they can life off helping people be healthy...I'd rather sit back, let you do all the work...

We did a little under $400k in PT alone last year. There are small pt facilities doing over a million. You may wish to think before you speak or at least do some research.

I do both. Work for the gym as well as independent.

The gym biz is like any other biz. You provide the brains, and somebody else provides the cash.. and either you put together the biz plan yourself, or you put it together with your investor(s), and then you negotiate compensation.

I'm in a 'small' gym as well. 12.5 sq feet of 'strength training/cardio' (like a regular gym), plus about 1200 sq feet of 'functional training' area where I run bootcamps/crossfit type stuff.

Our gym is an 'anti-corporate' gym as well... I know everybody's name and what they do and where they're from. It's one of the wealthiest areas in the country, so we have a lot of 'snow-birds' who come here for the winter from Canada, the Midwest, Washington/Oregon, and the north east. We/I also provide in-home training for wealthy ppl who can't be bothered by coming to the gym.

btw... I read "Think like a billionaire" by Trump as well, (along with his other books, and all Kiyosaki's, and Robert greenes, and tony robbins, and jack welch, ect...) and while "personal training" wasn't mentioned, the common theme is "Find what youre good at.. what do you do that you do better than everybody else" and you do it... and keep long term goals in sight, and you'll do well.

I could care less about becoming a millionaire.  I'm building my off-grid property and afterwards I'm not going to worry about what goes on in the world.

Money is of no value if you have to work 80 hours a week in a very stressful and/or dangerous enviroment.  Maybe one day you'll figure that out

Between you and oldtimer1 i cant tell who is more less informed. There is a ton of demographics in which trainers work in. Not to mention most have become more valuable than physical therapy.
I agree with u a lot. That last sentence is the dumbest thing I have seen u post. Most trainers have become more valuable than real physical therapy. So trainers are taking care of stoke patients, spinal cord injuries, amputations and the list goes on and on. You could have easily made your point without that last sentence.

You're right, I should have clarified that. I meant as far as post physical therapy rehab (passive) in things like CL repairs and reconstruction, rotator cuff, low back, etc. I'm not suggesting any trainer can do this but good trainers that specialize in say, athletes ;D can do just as well and sometimes more.

We have a Orthopedic surgeon that we get referrals from almost weekly on things like this. But do work with physical therapists as well in house. As an example. I have a kid, 22. Went to Vegas for the weekend, got blind drunk then slept in one position for 14-15 hrs straight. Arm went numb all the way down to his finger tips. His Ortho diagnosed it as "Saturday Night Syndrom" (Radial Nerve Dysfunction), Dr. wrote his a prescription for physical therapy. Goes to PT, she says she does not want him lifting ANY WEIGHTS, including legs for a period of six months. Right away that set of a bell of bullshit.

I am no position to be diagnosing or giving a second opinion, so I had someone do it for me. He's a trainer, strength and conditioning coach (former head of the Philadelphia 76'  and a Dr. of PT. I emailed the report to him and suggested the recovery time should be 6-12 weeks. Through different modalities and progressions of our own protocols, he's about 90% recovered. Point is, the orginal PT wanted him doing NOTHING, come to them 2x per week and the protocol was next to nothing. He did farmers walks today with fat grips with 55lb DB's for 30 yards.
