Can anyone with medical know how discuss what would be the long term repercussions of that for Paul?
Lasix is a 'loop diuretic'....meaning it works on the loop of Henle, a structure in the kidney involved with the reabsorbing of water.
Complicated process but the short version is that Lasix encourages the kidneys to remove water from the blood thus producing more urine....the body keeps the ammount of water in the blood and tissues in balance so as the ammount of water in the blood decreases fluid is drawn out of the tissues to dilute the blood and keep this balance.....this is the effect bodybuilders seek, drawing water out of the tissues....particularly from under the skin for that dry look.
Problems with it....when you take water out of the blood and increase its viscosity you risk a heart attack (EPO users have this same problem but theirs is from an increased red blood cell count making their blood thick)...loop diuretics cause the excretion of sodium and potassium, these elctrolytes are used to convey the electrical signal across your heart for it to beat....no sodium and potassium in your system means a cardiac arrest....
Lasix use can be fatal but an earlier post said Dillet used 40mg....this is not a large ammount, thats a standard adult dose in UK EMS for fluid on the lungs (LVF)....in fact i've seen a Dr whack 80mgs in an old chap in a single dose...i can only assume Dillet was already badly dehydrated before the Lasix went in.
