St. Helens School Board chairman Marshall Porter told ABCNews.com that the board lifted a ban that prevented school employees from carrying guns on campus with concealed weapons permits on Wednesday.

"The current law in Oregon allows for anybody to concealed carry on school grounds," he said. "To exclude our staff seems like they're being punished. They should have a right to protect themselves if they so choose."

"I have my kids in there. If there was a chance that something was to happen, and there's a chance that a teacher might be able to protect them, I'm fine with that," school board member Kellie Smith told ABC News' Portland affiliate KATU-TV.

love it.   I'd be happy with the state having some cheesy certification to allow people to commonly carry in schools, universities, etc.

And if some ass-hat decides to be a hero and misuses that gun, you lock his $@#*&# ass up for life, no exceptions.   I love trained & prepared & mature teachers being able to police schools.  I'd hate some idiot like Mr. Zimmerman pulling his 1911 every time two kids are in each others faces talking shit, ya know?

Make the rules & expectations VERY clear - respect the rights of teachers, and punish the fck out of those that violate the rules.

VAGUE policies make this a bad idea - clear & detailed rules of conduct are awesome for this.  You don't draw it unless forcible felony/life in danger.  Some moron will fire warning shots to break up a lunchroom fight and ruin it for everyone.   >:(

I dont think I've mentioned his name in weeks.

however, in the future, in threads such as this about gun permits, when I need an example of a person using a gun for courage and being bloodthirsty for a confrontation because, in his own words, he just wants to catch bad guys...

well... it's hard to think of another name that better fits :)

he didnt legally do anything wrong, deal with it...

what he did was within his legal rights as decided by the jury

he did plenty wrong.  He was caught in many lies that his own lawyer admitted.  He was a danger to others and ran into a gun battle.

Yes, it was legal, but it wasn't right.

There's plenty difference.  LOTS of shit in history has been LEGAL but not RIGHT.  The law changes.. heck, the jurors said they wish they could have found him guilty of SOMETHING, but the law doesn't prevent cowboy shit, even if it is wrong.

So yes, you're right, LEGALLY he didn't nothing wrong, he's cool.  But I'd like to ensure guidelines are in place to make sure teachers aren't given that kind of leeway lol... "You're allowed to chase a kid down the hallway into an alley behind the school for skipping class, and if a fight/shooting happens and nobody sees the incident clearly, well, hey, go back to homeroom a hero, you sumbitch.

Clear guidelines would prevent that.  If you're a teacher and you choose to carry, you don't run alone into a confrontation with a student after chasing him 500 feet, for example.  Keeps everyone safe.  If you call the office and they say the SRO is on his way, maybe you don't run under the bleachers to get hallway addresses lol.

Its all good, but that area is no east L.A.

Just wait unil a teacher kills a student in a borderline justified incident.

That's when you will see  the power of the Lib ithis country.

What more stringent guidelines do you want outside of what is already taught in concealed carry classes?

if a teacher is assaulted by a student and that student happens to notice his concealed weapon and tries to get it away from him, do you think the teacher would be justified in shooting the student?

lol this made me chuckle.

I picture strawman, a 120lb pale string bean white guy shaking his fist grandpa style ranting about how pistol grips, folding stocks and flash suppressers make guns more deadly.

I'm glad you asked.  Duty to retreat, for one.  There isn't one in real life when you're battling on the street.  You can stand your ground and cap someone for being 'in your space' as long as you claim you were scared.  I sure as fck don't want a teacher going for his piece ina crowded classroom because "he felt threatened".

It used to be, the man with a gun had a DUTY to at least attempt to diffuse the situation.
