Nevada IS a death penalty state. 1st degree murder is punishable by death. I wonder if Titus will be found with 1st or 2nd degree murder.

Craig Titus / Kelly Ryan Extradition Hearing Notes – 12-27-05

At approximately 12:15 – 12:30pm Eastern time on December 27, 2005, Craig Ryan and Kelly Titus were brought into the Stoughton, Massuchusetts Court House.  The hearing was short, and since the state of Nevada did not have enough documents or paperwork to extradite them at this time, they postponed the hearing until January 11th or sometime around then.

Craig & Kelly looked a lot better than they did when they found them.  At the hearing, they had two lawyers there, and when they go back to Nevada, they are already working on some excellent lawyers.  They are currently staying at the Northfolk County Correctional Facilities, In Dedham, Massachusetts until the next hearing.

There were some news crews filming so we should be able to get soom footage from outside the courtroom.

Fugitive Bodybuilders Appear In Court

STOUGHTON, Mass. -- Husband and wife bodybuilders from Las Vegas were arraigned on fugitive from justice charges Tuesday morning in Stoughton.

NewsCenter 5's David Boeri reported that Craig Titus and his wife, Kelly Ryan, pleaded not guilty to the charges in Stoughton District Court. The two are accused of killing their former assistant in Las Vegas.

Attorneys for the couple said both plan to fight rendition to Nevada, a process that could take eight weeks.

The couple was arrested Friday in Stoughton while Ryan was having a manicure.

Titus, a 1996 bodybuilding champion, told police he had a secret romance with the couple's assistant, Melissa James, 28. Her body was found in the trunk of a burned Jaguar on Dec. 14 near Las Vegas. Police said Titus strangled her before torching the car. Ryan will be charged with accessory to murder.

The couple was allegedly seen at a Las Vegas-area Wal-Mart buying seven bottles of charcoal starter fluid and a barbecue tool set.

A third person, Anthony Gross, has also been arrested and faces an accessory to murder charge.

The prosecution side is off to a pathetic start.  This could be a good omen for the defense.

STOUGHTON, Mass. --Two professional bodybuilders sought by Nevada authorities in the slaying and burning of their live-in personal aide said in a Massachusetts court Tuesday that they would fight legal transfer to their home state to answer charges there.

Craig Titus and Kelly Ryan pleaded innocent to fugitive charges in Stoughton District Court and were ordered held without bond pending a Jan. 12 status hearing on authorities' attempts to return them to Nevada.
A phone call seeking comment Tuesday from Titus' Massachusetts attorney, Robert George, was not immediately returned.

In Las Vegas, bail was set at $13,000 on Tuesday for Anthony Gross, who is accused of being an accessory in the killing of Melissa James.

Titus, 40,and Ryan, 33, were arrested Friday at a grocery store parking lot in Stoughton by federal agents and local police who had received a tip that the married couple was in the area.

The body of James, 28, was found Dec. 14 in the trunk of Ryan's abandoned and burned-out Jaguar sedan outside Las Vegas. Authorities say Gross bought a can of gasoline and followed in his pickup as Titus allegedly drove the Jaguar to a remote desert highway, took the gas and set the car on fire.

Gross, 23, told police he drove Titus back to Las Vegas, but they did not discuss what happened. He was arrested last week in Las Vegas.

Titus, who won a 1996 bodybuilding championship and competed in Mr. Olympia events, faces state charges in Nevada including murder, accessory to murder and third-degree arson, according to a warrant issued Dec. 20 in Las Vegas.

Ryan, a past Fitness America and Fitness International winner and Fitness Olympia runner-up, is charged with accessory to murder and third-degree arson.

In interviews with police before they left Nevada, neither Titus nor Ryan admitted involvement with James' slaying. But Titus told Las Vegas police he'd had a secret romance with James, court records show.

Titus later told a business partner that he intended to meet a friend in Boston, liquidate his assets and leave the country, police said.
