Shane was taken off life support last night. He is breathing on his own, has brain activity and is squeezing his mother's hand. Stop saying RIP. Start saying GET WELL SOON. - Tracy Lee

Read today that he liked had an arrhythmia called long QT syndrome which can happen in young athletes.  Completely non-AAS related. That arrhythmia can suddenly become Ventricular Fibrillation, which can be deadly and/or cause a heart attack.  We don't routinely do ECGs on athletes in the US but this kind of abnormality can be caught on ECG.

That's what his father told me. He said it was a genetic marker that runs in is family. His father had open heart surgery three years ago and another close family member (can't remember which one) had an EKG last year and happen to be going through an episode during the EKG. He has to take medication for the rest of his life but it solved the problem. He said if he knew, he would have had Shane checked out years ago.

That genetic defect has killed athletes. In some countries like Italy I believe actually screen athletes for this. The heart can have a clog heart attack or an electrical type heart attack. This is the latter. Just terrible when you hear a basketball player or some other athlete dropping dead in their prime from this.
