Also, the whole tax discussion is often very much oversimplified, especially by americans. For some bizarre reason they only want to compare federal tax rates to, e.g., Dutch income tax rates. Sure, then there difference can be stark. But when I read about how insanely high US state taxes and such are, I'm sure that just federal taxes aren't the only determinant. Plus of course you have to take into account what is being done with those taxes. Yes, my direct income tax is quite a lot higher. But healthcare contributions (~ $100 monthly), education (mostly free, small (~1600 yearly) copay for college education), etc. are all much lower because of it.

So I think it would be fairer to compare what we all have left at the end of the month, after everything has been paid for one way or another.
