You're missing the point and made his point; it's not about having an "advantage", it's about having a chance to defend yourself. Criminals will ALWAYS have guns, legal or not.

I'm Australian. No doubt finding yourself a victim of a crime with gun wielding assailants would be terrifying. I could be wrong, but generally people waving a gun around as a threat want something, like bank robbers want cash. Now if I have a gun I automatically become a target and a threat to the criminal, he is definitely going to want to take me out now. Their may be times when you are able to take out such a criminal, but I am sure their are just as many times when the criminal takes you out because of it. This is the reason bank clerks hand over money, just do what the crook wants and nobody gets hurt (lol)
Now crazed psychotic gunmen going on a mass shooting spree in schools or theatres is different, these types of shooters won't respond to compliance or anyone for that matter. Here in Australia our gun control has so far prevented a mass shooting since legislation was introduced. Australia had 13 gun massacres in the 18 years before the 1996 gun reforms, but has not suffered any mass shootings since.
Will that work in America, I don't think so. America is too awash with guns and the gun culture is literally a mental illness. Essentially America is fucked, they will just have to lie in the bloody bed they have made and argue eternally amongst themselves after every regular mass shooting. It is sad to watch a culture self implode like that. You would think that the fear based school culture with armed guards, metal detectors and the like would have been an indication of a wrong turn taken somewhere. Not only does America have to worry about terrorism from without due to it's foreign policy, it has to worry about terrorism from within due to federal policy.
Guns are tools of fear, the more afraid the population, the more they will want guns. The more people want guns the more fear is generated and round and round we go. The only way to reduce that is to face the fear and live without guns. But Americans are too afraid to live without guns. To live without guns in a culture like America's would take courage, something that is sorely lacking in the average Americans personal constitution.
