someone put this into a summary...

ukraine is having a civil war.   Russia, its neighbor, is going in to take over/ capitalize on it/ help one side win?

I think if Mexico was having a civil war, I'm 100% sure the USA would be in there making sure the right guy/side took over.

You gotta make sure your neighbors are cool.   We would be IRATE if Russia stuck their nose into a Mexican civil war and put their bombs, tanks on the usa/mexican border.

I know mccain wants a war, but "We are all Ukranians" has to be one of the silliest things he's ever said.  He's mad that russia is getting involved, and we're not... is that pretty much the case?

Of course no one is going to traditional war against Russia.

BUT.
There is the economy. I'm not an expert but just pushing in the media hysteria of full blown war, threaten to severe ties etc. is enough to make investors take their money and run.
Today Reuters reported Russian central bank freed $10 billion worth of reserves to stabilize the ruble. Moscow stock exchange dropped some 10% today last I heard.
Good side is that the world is in recession and no one is probably willing to go too far. I bet they know this in Kremlin too. It can still get quite expensive.

Russia doesn't have its own system anymore like back in the Soviet times. It's part of global economy now.

I know you Yanks probably don't give a shit, but we in the U.K. are at the mercy of Russia for a major gas pipeline. Yes sure boycott the paraolympics (who gives a shit anyway lol) but don't go too far, or we will be on our knees begging for gas.

truth.....bottom line!
yah when its all said and done, it comes down that we are humanus economicus.

all the blabla politics angles and manifestos nobody gives a shit, well the russian older folks dont, they dont want dreaming of millions, they only want the outlook to stability in life.or atleast the rpomise.

the kiev twats want something with eu, im not sure whats stopping them from going to the eu on personal basis if they think its so good there.

the only one asset esp the west unkraine has is some oil pipelines running through there, but its old and outdated and first and foremost, soon to be onsolete, new pipelines are built and almost reaady.

the ppl dont want instable newbie govt who sucks up to the imf even before theyre established.
their "army" are running over to russian army oh brother haha, goes to show how much helpful their western"allies" really are.
the west will only help in the propaganda aspects, and maybe with financial loans(lets not call that help, lets call it what it is a financial burden)..

russia has the money and can pay for a social system and pensions from pocket chump change.kiev have to suck up to imf.(who will dictate political measures in "exchange").

yeah this is bad.
financal wars are just as bad, and the threat to kick them out of g8 is kinda like an embargo.

They agree to stop moving further then the Crimea...pull back some troops etc....allow time for the new government of Ukraine to form and then they can all figure this shit out. Putin is not giving up Crimea but if that's as far as he goes, I'm sure the West will have to live with it. Since 1991...its the Russians loosing ground and they need the Black Sea.

Haha but Game ain't serious as long as everything is new and shiny.

You can tell it turns serious when Russia sends in the "special battalions" with their rusty BTR's consisting of Chechens and others alike, like Vostok in Georgia  ;D

O-ou. Seems like no satisfactory deal reached behind the curtains so far.

BREAKING NEWS Mark Mardell North America editor tweets: US State Dept says they are preparing to put sanctions on Russia and are "moving down that path"

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26413953

Question remains whether it will be anything that matters or just something along "Kadyrov won't be granted visa to US".
It's hard to imagine what it could be. The trade between the countries is basically non-existent.

Someone said that if Putin manages to win this and continue his triumph on international arena, he is the president for life but if shit hits the fan for Russia (economy), he will be writing his memoirs sooner than he thought.

Seems like Putin knows exactly how to run the show. I should have learned already: You can't bet against Putin and win.

18:44: The BBC's political editor Nick Robinson has more on the official document that reveals that the UK government will not curb trade with Russia or close London's financial centre to Russians. The document also says British ministers should "discourage any discussion (eg at Nato) of contingency military preparations". You can read more here.

Strong indication Russia is there to stay IMO:

18:29 Crimea hopes to receive the financial aid of $1 bln from Russia, said the deputy prime minister of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Rustam Temirgaliyev.

"Russia is ready to grant 1 billion dollars in aid to Crimea," Temirgaliyev said on Monday, adding that the Crimean authorities had already received from Russia a plan of financial assistance.

According to the deputy minister, Russian companies are also ready to invest about $5 billion in various investment projects on the territory of Crimea.
