the official GB great book thread
« on: March 21, 2014, 11:38:41 AM »
i had no idea so many guys here are well read.

from time to time a thread will pop up when guys reference some pretty good reads.

i was hoping we could start a thread where we categorise the type of literature you're into (ie fiction, historical fiction, non fiction, historical non fiction, biographical etc) and the books you recommend that others should pick up.

for historical fiction look to conn iggdulen. man i was surprised to see so many of you knew about him. i stumbled upon him by accident in the library one day. the cover of the book looked good so i picked it up. it was wolf of the plains. been hooked since. he sticks to the script historically but breathes life into the characters. his series on julius ceaser and genghis kahn are great reads. christian camerons God of War as told by ptolemy about the life of alexander the great was very entertaining as well.

for fiction series check out the jack reacher books by lee child. page burners. also really like james rollins stuff. nelson demille in general, the john corey books in particular. i just cant get into jack higgins or robert ludlum for some reason.

non fiction, i really liked Walden by henry david thoreau.

post them up! i need some good reads. the next two biographies on my list are phil jacksons and mike tysons.

For insight on the current and future global financial situation you gotta read CURRENCY WARS by James Rickard.

I also just finished a surefire Getbigger's fave, MUSCLE by Samuel Wilson Fussell.

 ;)

Ben Kane-he has a two book story on Spartacus that is a good read....he also has two books with a third coming about Hannibal...the characters are soldiers in both armies but not so much Hannibal himself but still good books

Simon Scarrow and Anthony Riches both have continuing book series on Roman soldiers that get older and more battle hardened...both great series.

And I could never forget to mention Bernard Cornwell 8)...The Saxon stories.. he deals with the Viking invasions of England...and also the Starbuck books...written about a Northern boy who ends up fighting for the South in the American civil war

....I'm sure you'd very much like these books 8)

I would recommend you "Initiation" by Elisabeth Haich, anything by Vivekananda and any book from my friends Stewart and Janet Swerdlow.

Fiction: it was trite, but I really liked "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving.

Non-fiction: "Carnage and Culture" by Victor Davis Hanson

Read Burr, by Gore Vidal and then the rest of his American Chronicle series.  Start with Burr though.
