Pics

Haneys back gives them a run. Despite him not being a mass monster, he still had a lot of size. Not as big as Yates or Coleman but better proportions. Haney and 1999 Coleman are tied as best ever in my view. Haney was more dominant during his era than any bodybuilder

Any opinions change when upper bodies are switched...

Yates upper body with Ronnie's lower body actually looks more complete & balanced because of Ronnie's hams/quads & glutes. While Ronnie's upper body with Yates lower body looks top heavy and too smooth from the waist down. That's why I always have Ronnie winning the RLS against Dorian. We can argue forever on who's back is better, but no one can argue over who's hams/quads & glutes are better from the back and Dorian's calves don't make up for it.

Thank you.  Now this guy was the most dominant bodybuilder ever.  After his third place debut he won every Mr O hands down and was miles ahead of every man on the planet.  No one, not even Ronnie, can say that.

Haney did not have the same level of competition that Dorian did. There WERE some great competitors during Haney's reign, but nowhere in the same league as that of Dorian's.

Probably, but that's not Haney's fault. You can't penalize him for that,he didn't choose his competition. The important fact is that he was dominant.

Well it's all relevant. 250lb on stage is not a mass monsters compared to todays competitors. He was not a mass monster compared to a 300lb Coleman or Ruhl or Kovacs etc. But he was during his era.

I think Haney was the best of all time - he had mass but combined it with proportions and symmetry.

Yeah Ronnie in 1999 was as good as Haney. Haney was better overall though for his consistency throughout his career, constantly improving along the way. I thought Ronnie declined toward the end of his competitive career. Haney and Coleman top two in my opinion.

How people forget. Sergio was unopposed in 1968......clearly that makes him the most dominant Mr Olympia.

The 1968 Mr. Olympia contest was an IFBB professional bodybuilding competition held in September[citation needed] 1968 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in Brooklyn, New York. It was the 4th Mr. Olympia competition held.

Sergio Oliva defended his title unopposed. Other contestants were expected to compete but all withdrew. Harold Poole received a job promotion in 1968 and it adversely affected his ability to train for the competition. Dave Draper found himself in the Hollywood spotlight, and movie making and film promotion disrupted his ability to prepare for the contest. Chuck Sipes was in attendance that evening. He won the Mr. World the same day, and had also taken time to perform strongman stunts. But, on the advice of Joe Weider, Chuck withdrew from the competition.[1]

I mean seriously, look at that pic, that's just silly.

Levrone looks like he never trained back his entire life next to Ronnie, and Kev was one of the Top 3 Bodybuilders in the world at that time :D

it's tough to have a big back if one just trains to grow INTO a show.

We saw Kai and Phil looking as big as a house all year, while jay was skinny with stupid puffy arms... he trains for 3 months and his back looks just so weak next to them.  They built THICKNESS all year.  Can't fake that with back.

Same with this Levrone/Ronnie pic... Levrone would train for 3-4 months and grow into a show.  Smart strategy - kept his health and his hair and really didn't abuse himself like so many dudes of the era.  BUT we see what the additional 8 months of heavy ass deadlifts that Ronnie was doing really translate to, on contest day.     Or, see Arnold 1980.

Arms and chest will grow into a show, everyone trains them.  But thighs and back... seems like the dudes that 'grow into' a show have a more difficult time there.

Phil looks like a swimmer most of the year, he gets dwarfed by average gymrats and girls at all the expos etc. ???

Phil is a paradigm for "growing into the show"

Arnold ended up beating him, though. Later.

This. Today Haney wouldn't place Top 3 in his weight class at the Jr Nationals.

The 80s were a joke, in the 90s BB became BB.

Not true. Consider if Haney had access to insulin and GH. Just sayin.

only coleman at his best had the 'shopped' kind of flare

dorian's waist was just too thick to have the crazy taper.
