Machines must be a waste of time. Good thing I haven't used machines for several years now.

Is it a wast of time to use machines?

I think machines have their place. I use them to warm up or at the end of my workout to burn whatever energy I have left if I feel like I need to.

Finally a getbigger gets it, I have being preaching this for years on this site, free weights should always be the foundation of your workout.

There is nothing wrong with machines....the older you get the more you'll appreciate them.  Young guys that haven't been injured spew the anti-machine stuff.  I love the free weights and they'll always be my core, but frees, cables and machines together are excellent.

DOMS is generally caused by the eccentric portion of a lift and tends to be mostly caused by movements where the eccentric part of the lift occurs AS THE MUSCLE GROUP IS STRETCHED. For example, think of dumbbell flies - the pecs become more and more stretched during the eccentric portion of the lift. The stiff leg deadlift is another example, as is the dumbbell pullover. These types of movements cause severe DOMS.

Very few machines I can think of put the muscle in a truly stretched position during the eccentric portion of the lift like free weights can.

BTW, DOMS is not a good indicator of muscle growth. For example, stretch one hamstring hard with a rope or towel for 30 seconds and repeat several times throughout the day. Don't do anything to the other one. See how they compare the next day. I think DOMS is largely due to the stretching of and trauma to the fascia surrounding the muscle.

Dude, you could go and push your car to the gas station b/c you ran out of gas in the middle of nowhere.

Trust me when I tell you, the next day you will have D.O.M.S. everywhere.

So, would you bring your car into the gym???

Saying that the eccentric phase of a contraction is generally known to cause D.O.M.S is a myth. In actuality, what causes D.O.M.S. specifically has not yet been scientifically proven.

Now, if I put you through a day of PNF stretching, or even if you had an extreme deep-tissue massage, do you think you would be sore the next day?

In summary: Machines are NOT going more D.O.M.S than free weights or anything else.

Some people don't ever get sore after anything, others get sore over anything... especially something new.

I think there are all different kinds of post-workout pain that we just randomly call "D.O.M.S"

The eccentric portion has been shown to cause the most soreness. But the last point you made is correct. I think a lot of different types of soreness with different causes are just lumped together as DOMS. Lactic acid build up from sprinting is one that always has me sore the next day if I haven't done it in awhile.

Sure the muscle has no idea what kind of exercise and reps you are doing.

It doesn't, but your central nervous system does. And it fucking controls your muscles.

Read some research on how differently body responds to free weights and machines and in the meanwhile, sit back and don't involve in discussions about matters you know nothing about. Thx.

Way to misquote someone.

Your muscle doesnt know it its on a machine doing lots of reps or with a free bar doing lots of reps, same goes for a few reps.   ::)

free weights stimulate supporting muscles where machines tend to isolate.

You can stress an individual muscle just as much with a machine that with a free bar, in fact I would argue more in certain circumstances.

I never get sore from lifting. I wonder if has something to do with lifting weights for 40 plus years. At the end of back I was training with a guy and I said let's finish with some dead lifts. Using 315lbs we got our reps and sets in. My one time training partner said he was really sore from the workout and I felt nothing.

Many machines you don't even have to grip hard to hold on to the weight. That has to have an effect on the overall muscle and stabilizing muscles...

Most getbiggers don't lift to avoid D.O.M.S.
